Viber only works good if there is a really good signal. My wife first tried using them a couple years back and was not satisfied with their service to her province in Mindanao.

If you want to call the USA from the Philippines, get google voice and an OBI, set it up with a U.S. phone number then ship the OBI to the Philippines (yes internet is required), they can now call anywhere in the USA or Canada for FREE.

Google voice does a paid service if you want to call other countries (or general calls to the Philippines)  for a small per minute fee.

Been using this service for 8 years now, have one in my home in the USA and our home in the Philippines.  The OBI is $49 on Amazon.   After that it is FREE.     Makes it very easy for family to call us .

From what I gather with viber out you are buying credits with those tabs, they don't seem to allow you decide the amount randomly.

sounds cool. Checked Obi in Amazon and it cost $49.99. Still confused how this thing work. So you only need google voice talk acct if you need to do international calls right? if local calls then no need?

The OBI is a device, you need a VOIP service linked to it, the OBI will work with most VOIP services, but it works especially well with Google Voice .. and one can't beat FREE for monthly fees when calling USA or Canada phone numbers.   I just grab a phone number from google voice for whatever city I want.    When making calls to foreign phone numbers I add a few dollars to my google account and just dial the number .. done.   Because there are lots of calls between the Philippines and the USA I brought a couple OBIs with me on earlier trips.  I have them all listed on my OBItalk dashboard where I can even maintain firmware updates for those OBIs in the Philippines (very cool)

It really is this simple to get up and running:

  • Connect OBi to your Internet router
  • Connect your home phone to the OBi
  • Get an OBiTALK account
  • Add the VoIP Service of your choice  (I choose google voice from the list, it will then ask for the email address linked to the google voice)
  • Keep your existing phone number
