Renewing your Canadian Passport

I renewed my passport last year while in Canada.  Best thing to do, even if it was a bit early  and the renewing forms are twice as easy.  

 

A note to anyone trying to do this while visiting.  They can mail it to you but only to your current address which would be your US address, and if you've been reading the OP states its super expensive. They will not mail it to a Canadian address, even your children (who were with me and happened to be renewing their passports too).  Best bet is to pay the additional fee to have it expedited and its ready in 1-2 hours.  

 

ps. Costco in Canada and US take great passport photos and are super cheap.  Remember that Canada's passport photo sizes are different from the US so be sure to let the photographer know the proper dimensions.  Canada size is 50 mm x 70 mm whereas the US size is 2"x 2".

The renewal form from the USA was the same as the one from within Canada.  The only time they're more complicated is if your passport is expired for more than 1 year or you are changing a name.  Then it's the same "new" application as Canada!  

So regardless, the forms are EXACTLY the same. 

 

I haven't been to Canada since 2014 with zero plans to go there last year before it expired so renewing from WITHIN the USA was the only option.  Honestly, the ticket for me to fly to Canada and back is more expensive than the cost of the photos, the passport, and the shipping combined so travelling specifically just to renew isn't exactly feasible.  Not all of us live within a reasonable driving distance.  I'm not driving 15 hours each way through Wyoming and Montana either.

Really Flames? I heard that it is now a requirement if flying by air into Canada that duals need to carry a Canadian passport to enter Canada. I'm flying into YWG next week and have not renewed my Canadian passport

I usually fly back a few times a year (Have not yet in 2018) and have had no issues traveling on my USA Passport.   They do ask Nationality and I do say Canadian.....as it does state ones place of Birth....and I do have a Cdn Military card (retired) as further proof, but have never had to show it.

There is an exception to that requirement as noted on the official IRCC webpage:

 

Exception: If you are an American-Canadian dual citizen with a valid U.S. passport, you don’t need a Canadian passport to fly to Canada. However, you will still need to carry proper identification and meet the basic requirements to enter Canada.

HI there! My  passport expires May 2019 and I was going to renew in person but if I can save that money , why not, eh?

I should have renewed for 10yrs last time .

 

I am a K1 visa ( still waiting for biometrics since jul 2017) at the ROC  i751 step.  When renewing, what about the visa (i94?) that is in our passport? I believe that expired 90days after issuance so I would like to think that it is no longer important. Can someone confirm for me?  On the GC site about renewing, it mentions that if a visa is still needed, they need to be  informed .

Depends on which ones you are using. Since I was in the US and didn't know anyone with a Canadian passport, I had to go with a occupational guarantor. Look at the instructions, it will let you know the requirements for each type of guarantor.

References are not the same as the guarantor.  References have to have known the applicant for at least two years. There's no restriction on their place of residence or citizenship.

I used two US references, but you can use Canadian ones.

Ooops, sorry I got confused. You are absolutely right. I used 2 US references.
