I am so stressed right now. I knew I should've looked over what he was doing when he was renewing (because I know how confusing immigration stuff is), but he said he was following the instructions on a letter the government sent him about renewing his green card. He had his biometrics exam back in November. 3 months later, and we're wondering where his card is, so I'm looking around online and realize that he was supposed to remove the conditions on his green card with an i-751, not the i-90. His green card expires NEXT MONTH and we wasted $400 filing for the i-90, and now he's probably going to be jobless for at least 5 months since we'll have to refile. What do I do? What is the smartest thing to do here (other than obviously filing the i-751 as soon as humanly possible)? Is there a work authorization card we can try to apply for at the same time? Would that even be worth it, or speed up the process at all? Any chance I'd be able to get the $400 back for filing for the wrong thing? And why the hell did they even tell him to go to the i-90 if that's not what he needed?! Uuuuugggghh I hate US Immigration! :(

File the I-751.  Once you do you will receive an extension letter for 1 year which maintains his current immigration benefits.  No chance of a refund

YMMV

He won't be jobless. Once your file the I-751, you'll receive an extension letter to extend the GC for one year. No need for extra work permit or anything like that. You get that letter in 7-14 days after filing.
