Use the expired green card, plus the one year extension letter, and you should be good. That is what I used. Show them the extension letter.

UPDATE:    I went to the DMV today.  (There is a note on my learner permit under restrictions, that states i am a Temp visitor and an exp date,  that has of course expired because of the two year conditional green card.   So i was told i need to get that part updated before i can take my test.  However  i can't update that because i don't have my 10 year green card yet).

 -  Unfortunately  they refused to recognize the official extension letter and said i have no option than to just wait for my new green card to arrive.    That makes no sense whatsoever.

What happens to those people who are waiting on their green cards and have to renew a  full license?  They cannot suddenly  be unable to drive/get to work for 12-15 months?  What do i do now?  because i cannot wait 12-15 months - i have to get my driving test done asap.

Sounds like you may have bumped into a bad representative, but as another posted mentioned, it often depends state to state. Most recommend talking to a supervisor and/or going back a different occasion and trying again.

Thanks for your reply.

I did speak to a supervisor - they even called someone on the phone. Said they never ever accept the letter only the actual green card. I am going to try a different office. It is very frustrating they wont accept an official government letter, then what is the point on having the letter to begin with?

So I'm thumbing through our copy of the petition and realized we didn't mark anything for the children category.  Now we don't have any kids, but we didn't even mark N/A in those boxes.  I don't recall if we did that on the AoS section or not but our AoS went through with no problems.  Is this a possibility for getting an RFE or delaying the application whenever they finally get around to it?

On the chance that there may be kids in the future before this gets approved, would I then have to mark that yes there are children despite not having any when initially submitting the application?

Just wanted to share mu recent experience with traveling abroad with the extension letter (Los Angeles to Istanbul to Sarajevo and back)

Leaving the country I had no issues. When checking in in Sarajevo on way back, they asked for my green card and everything was fine. In Istanbul they asked for the green card the extension letter, asked me a few questions and everything was ok. At LAX I just gave the immigration officer all the papers. He asked me two questions - How are you? and How long was your trip? (And the fingerprints and photo, of course). That was it.

No issues whatsoever ;)

Oh yeah I forgot to share my experience traveling too. I came back from Japan 2 weeks ago with my expired GC and extension letter. I had to explain the situation in Tokyo but no specific issue. And in the US no problem either, the only part that REALLY sucks is that I can't use Global Entry anymore, which is very very very painful .

Also - my case has STILL not been updated on my online USCIS account. It is still saying that they received the biometrics fee, but it doesn't show I did the biometrics appointment (which was well over a month ago). Should I worry about it?

Hi Shana

I returned to the London April just gone to see my son about something. on the way out no problems, coming back through Orlando was great because the US Citizen and Green Card holders line was so small compared to the tourist/other passports line...phew advantages already...!!! The only problem was that I tried to use the automatic gates and it wouldn't detect my green card, obviously because it had expired, (so I wouldn't bother with that short cut) and so had to see a human immigration officer after all. He was fine a few easy questions and checked my extension letter, and have a nice day and on my way, so there is nothing to worry about...good luck!

Yeah, as I mentioned, it seems to vary state to state. You could try on another day and get a completely different result. I can't speak to the legality of them not following the letter, but definitely worth looking further into as to me it would seem unlawful not to let you apply for a license while your immigration status is lawfully pending.

I would not be too concerned. The ratio of people who leave those boxes blank to those that put N/A in them is about even. It's unlikely based on what others have said here on VJ.

Have you heard anything more? What did the letter say? Very curious.

And thanks for passing this on. Good news, I suppose, although not so good that they are admitting to the reality most of us face in a longer adjudication period. I've not received any letter or notification of this yet specifically.
