I have filed I-130 for my wife and we are waiting for approval (expected April 23rd-30th). She is in a foreign country. I am about to go file my taxes and wanted to ask what option should I file with? Married filing separately or do I file as single? Also do I get a tax number for her and file taxes for her as well?

You are married so you cannot file as single.

You could file as married filing separately or if you qualify as head of household.

You could get an ITIN for your wife but she is not required to file taxes.

Last year we filed jointly, in the same situation.  He had to Fed Ex his passport for me to get an ITIN.  It was a pain but worth it for the married tax credit.  It also is good to have for the interview.

To get an ITIN, look for an ITIN acceptance agent.  They can process the paperwork.  SSA wanted the person receiving it to come in person, which is putting the cart before the horse.  Just Google ITIN acceptance agents and you should get info.

You must also file paper tax returns.  No online filing. The ITIN request must be attached to the tax return.

Sounds like a plan.  I usually don't use paid tax preparers but I did for that.  They filled out the paperwork and mailed it.  The tax savings for filing as married covered all that plus the visa fees.
