My fiance owed child support more than 2k bucks. Is it gonna be a problem for us doing the k1?   He applied for passport but they keep it on hold since he owed.  Btw, he. keep paying his child support arrears tho.

Have you met him face to face yet?

YMMV

Yes we met last June-July 2017 in the USA when i was doing my J1.

Could be a problem for us if he owed CS and then apply k1.

Being current on child support is not a requirement for the petition

But would be a reason for denial?

The requirements for petition approval are pretty simple.

1.  Petitioner must be a USC

2.  Both be free to marry

3.  USC not be guilty of any related IMBRA crimes

4.  Both sign a letter of intent to marry within 90 days of arrival

5. Have to demonstrate that you have met face to face within the last 2 years

At the embassy the petitioner must demonstrate sufficient income at above 125% of the poverty line or have the ability to have a different sponsor for the fiancee

Demonstrate an ongoing relationship...

No where is the there a requirement to be current on child support, own a house, have a car, have no debts or garnishments, be a good person, etc....

When did they start denying passports based on Child Support?

I have heard of state agencies not renewing Driver Licenes or Vehicle Tags, but never a passport.

Several years back. It is one of the new "enhanced" ways to make you compliant with child support.

It is but it isn't because some guys are just dead beats in general. So they need something to bring them in to compliance. Where in the Philippines are you from if you don't mind me asking?

Aka the "hostage" approach. I think one off the up following steps is taking your driver's license. So if you depend on your car to get to work ( like most Americans), so you can pay childsupport...well in that case you're #$@&...

They should do this on case to case base, instead of punishing people and get them more into trouble. People loose jobs, get under-payed etc...Meanwhile life still goes on, and bills get stacked up.
