i have additional issues with the raise act. i think allowing those with the means to sponsor family to do so is a no brainer, but i also think that there should be balance so not only the wealthy can immigrate. we need the diversity visa process to provide that balance.

Sounds more like you mean we need to allow poor people to immigrate and immediately latch onto the govermment teet so the Democrats will increase their constiuency to provide political balance.

i think that sounds more like you're opinion than mine. i'm not an elitist. poor immigrants seeking a better shot at life in america should be more than welcome, kinda what i was raised to believe the american dream was all about.

Haha. All these discussions remind me of what my father used to tell me when I was in my 20s. "Everyone is young and a Democrat and becomes older and more and more Republican every year."

I can't say that I disagree with my father on this topic, all my co-workers joke about how our views have changed since we became home owners and seeing where our taxes are really going.

Personally I hate when people pigeon hole views into left and right. People should be able to use critical thinking to create their own choices but nothing like paying taxes and realizing where all your money is going to make you feel like the system in broken at times.

A democrat is a rich Republican who's son just got busted for dope. A Republican is a poor democrat who just inherited 3 million dollars . That is why I stay in the middle and have views on both sides.

How can I be the one deflecting, when I didn’t post an unverified claim with no source?  Asking you to post a source is NOT the definition of deflection.

Google is a reasonable source in this case. Type in "Haitian Entrepreneurs" and the first link will provide you with some examples. I'll do it for you. These are just the first two links. I had to do literally zero digging.

When a person raises an argument, it is encumbent upon them to provide the source, not make people go out and look it up themselves.

That would be like writing a book about how we are all going to die from global warming, and on page 1, print three links that talk about someone’s views on the subject, maybe why it might happen, with no further writing in the book.

Generally yes I agree, and if it took anything more than the first 2 links of my google search I would have asked for the source as well. I'm not going to spend time digging for information on something someone else has claimed. A single google search takes me around 5 seconds though.

On a internet forum, having a discussion...I think it is reasonable if your "source" is the top search result from google...you can simply ask the person to google the topic ("Haitian Entrepreneur")

It honestly is just a minor thing. I just provided the links for you to see, since you didn't seem to want to use google yourself. The conversation can continue to move forward. I just like providing sources :)

I noticed two things from your second link... that a woman had a failed business, decided to make toilet paper instead, and so began a new business.  Making something that 40% of her own people cannot afford to buy.

Also, Haiti is one of the worst countries for starting a new business.  #188 out of 189, in fact.

Any thoughts on why your link, touting a woman having a business in Haiti, popped up in the first place?

if we're talking about failed business ventures, i'd like to make sure everyone understands that trump is not from haiti.

Having a failed business and starting a new one is definitely entrepreneurship, isn't it? Trump used to do it all the time.

I'm sure Haiti is a horrible country to start a business - Even more power to people who are able to become an entrepreneur there. It is likely MUCH harder there than it is in the USA so the fact that they are ranked 188 out of 189 in fact speaks MORE about the women and men who are able to achieve something.

The top two links were:

1. A Haitian focused website talking about Haitian entrepreneurs featured in Forbes magazine that year - I'm guessing they wrote it because, I don't know, they were proud?

2. A Miami article focused a piece on a woman attending the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, with over 5,000 applicants and only 700 people chosen. Given how difficult it is to start a business in Haiti, I think that is something the woman should be proud of.

If you're going to make an outrageous generalizing and unverified statement about people from a country that come here for the same reason as any other immigrant does, then it's beyond belief why I should have to provide research on a subject that is a no-brainer, because nothing I provide will be good enough for you. What was provided to you by another poster wasn't good enough either. Is your spouse an entrepreneur and should they be given a special pass if they aren't, just because they come from a country you decide is okay?

If I say the earth is flat and hollow, does it make it true?
