oh, let me clarify, i didn't say everything that comes out of trump's mouth is racist. but when he gets to talking boy, he sure does let his true colors fly. he can't help himself. he's an old man, set in his ways.

You just said that "chain migration" is not racist in all context, but based on the MDL congressional leaders, apparently, the only time it is used in a racist context is when Trump does it.  I figured you were following the daily DNC talking points.

I work as a  healthcare provider and work regularly with getting approvals and denials from insurance companies. Our system is flawed but it is the current system we have, to help outsiders understand it we should provide them with guidelines that would allow them to be successful within it, and not set them up for failure.

Medicare is terrible coverage for retirement (I will make sure I have a secondary insurance when I am retirement age) but that is another conversation all together. I was just discussing this with a retired nurse yesterday.

Medicare + a supplement works. It's worked for my parents. It paid for everything for my mom's cancer. It gave her peace of mind when she didn't need to be worrying on such things... only to save her strength to recover. Imagine if everyone had that combination. Yes supplement premiums can be expensive, but not as much as average regular premiums for insurance these days. That being said there are some things, in particular some prescriptions that it won't cover that my dad needs but now can't take because of it.

I do agree that we explain nothing to immigrants about the healthcare system and we should explain something to them. I have high standards though and am continually shocked at how many USCs refuse to understand it or explain it to their foreign family members. But the failure when it comes to insurance is not really to do with the immigrant... based on the threads constantly made on VJ about insurance it is due to ignorance on the USC spouse's part, state regulations getting in the way, uneducated insurance employees, problems with employees at the SSA, and waiting too long for coverage (simply because they didn't realize they could be covered).

Interesting, I don't recall ever having anyone ask us about Katya's immigration process other than my immediate family.

You'd be surprised man... it gets tiring. He gets it at work all the time too, since that puts him into dealing with all sorts of public persons from students to elected officials....   it's really quite concerning when a politician or their staff also has no clue......

I agree that it might not be the immigrants (not knowing what they dont know) but this is why they should set up regulations to fill in these gaps of knowledge. No one wants to be going through something like cancer, heart attack, stroke and find out at the same time they are in massive amounts of debt because they were not prepared.

well we know that trump, for example, would not be too perturbed if it were a family from norway chain migrating but he might throw himself into a expletive laced rant if the family were from haiti. that feels racist to me.

Haiti.  That well-established, growing nation?  The one with so many successful entrepreneurs in their midst?  Those are the people you want to bring to America because they are going to improve things here?

There are many successful entrepreneurs from Haiti. But not everyone that immigrates to America is required to be an entrepreneur, suffice to say thankfully that is not a cornerstone requirement of what being this country and living in it is. Let me know when it becomes a requirement for our foreign spouses to 'improve America' to be allowed to stay here.

America as a country can and should afford to balance selfish reasons, with opportunities for people from disadvantaged areas.

I'm not saying we have the right balance right now, because I dont think we do. But I also don't think it should ALWAYS be about how each immigrant will improve America. Sometimes it can be about how America can help improve that immigrants life. That was how we were founded, and I think we should continue to reflect that moving forward.

I have been thinking about this a lot recently. One thought I have had about immigration is if we are smarter about family based immigration would it allow for more funding to help individuals like refugees. I do think we are all humans first but we have to be smart and systematic with a balance to make it all work. I would like to think if were smarter in one avenue of immigration that we could help others that truly need assistance.

Haiti has been given billions in aid over the years, and look where they still are as a whole.
