imo, there's no way you are integrated if you hold severe disdain for particular immigrants.

See you are accusing me of assuming but do exactly the same thing . Read your sentence. I have friends that are immigrants, colleagues. Skin colour or country of origin makes no difference to me . Also what you do in your bedroom doesent matter to me but if you dont speak english or live in your bubble yes I have disdain for you . My opinion is you should go right out the door and back to where you came from .

Thanks for that info. My wife is going to naturalize this year and is worried about the language test in all honesty. The big thing she hates is trying to listen and talk to people that have accents hahaha. So us being in the South doesn't help things at all for her. We were watching the news last night and they were interviewing a guy and my asked me "How can talk like that, can you understand him?", in my mind he was talking normal for NC.

There not many of us who speak received (proper) English.

Yeah I know right, my father was really bad about eating his words as my wife says. But they got along fine because he could barely hear her and she could barely understand him so it went great. :D

When I first got custody of my two older children when I lived in CA they had to go to 2 different schools due to their age for the first year. My daughter went to a good elementary school that is very diverse of all races and I loved it. While my son went to pretty bad elementary school that was not diverse at all, the make up of the school was like 50-60% Latino, 30-35%Black, and maybe just maybe 5% White if that. The school had so many Latino students that their parents could not speak English at all that doing meetings or performance when the administration spoke they would speak one paragraph in English and reiterate in Spanish for the Spanish speakers. While at my daughter's school that was more diverse and better performing the language was all in English. Don't even get me started on Parent involvement in the school because there was none at my son's school, while my daughter's school almost every parent was involved in some way or another. That school was great to say the least and they miss it, but they sure don't miss CA class sizes.

A lot of Americans just assume that you are picking up English from your environment and you shouldn't need help after xxx amount of time. Even my wife who can speak English fairly well has issues with some words and phrases(I had to teach her the English word for slug last night), but she can speak it enough to get her point across fairly well. We both think that people need to have a firmer grasp of English before they come here to immigrate, at least be able to speak in basic English to get a point across. I don't care if you have a accent or not just be able to get a point across.

Which was actually my point. Classrooms as we know, aren't one size fits all, and people learn in different ways. When a family comes to America and has no grasp of English (we don't state that an immigrant must know English as a pre-requisite for coming here.. and there are many situations where they wouldn't), how would you expect them to start learning, along with many other things they need to do to provide a stable foundation? Not saying they shouldn't -- they absolutely should. Do we have statistics on how non-English speaking adults vs non-English speaking children in classrooms should learn? Does a student learn effectively by the entire classroom speaking nothing but English and just hoping you pick up on it from the environment? Because this premise happens on a variety of things at least in our poor city schools and it's one reason why kids can't read, write, or do math. Or do they learn better by different types of instruction or one-on-one tutoring? You're going to find we agree a bit on the subject of English learning and classrooms... I just think we need to do a better job of it. We shouldn't be assuming things about people when we aren't in their shoes. I have seen people become irate at visitors that speak in their native languages, and have seen people become irate at people who are bi-lingual, and irate at people that do speak English but apparently not good enough for some.

it's a bad thing because you're judging without knowing the full story. you don't know why someone doesn't speak english. i was raised to mind my own business. more of that crazy leftist nonsense i guess.

Sounds like they were the ones who should have married each other.

Never said anything about newly arrived refugee families and what not . Its fine if it takea you 6 months a year or lets give it two . I know it can be easily done in 3-6 months just basics to get around in life . With full time job and not much money . You need wifi or internet access and a book or two . But if you see a persistent behaviour of refusing to learn or outright laziness , just like what i was refering to then thi is what I disdain . My english is not perfect but it lets me work, make a good living and participate in society and visa journey . Thats not a high bar to reach for anyone and should really be the minimum you can expect from newly arrived immigrants .

Luckily I just transferred over to IT Support and Compliance form Telecommunications. So that means I sit at a desk all day like today and wait for a guy to respond to MY REPEATED REQUESTS FOR MORE INFORMATION FROM HIM to help understand and fix his problem.
