Is it a new thing they are asking or have you been tested?

I had my medical examination in october in paris and had the x-ray chest exam and blood test.. in fact all the things they were asking for. I just received an RFE (because i didn't send the right paper about vaccinations) and in the letter they also mention this tuberculin skin test.. i thought no more examinations were needed once we were here.. Did they test you for that in your homecountry?

In the US, they usually do a skin test. If it comes out reactive / inconclusive, they do an x-ray. In cases where you've had TB or you got a TB vaccine, you also have to get the x-ray.

Hope that answers your question.

If they want you to have it, it's probably simpler just to get it done than to try and fight them... the test isn't a big drama - just a poke with a needle and then don't scratch it or wash it and go back again three mornings later so they can check for a reaction.

Hexagone,

The tuberculin skin test or ppd is a screening test for tuberculosis and is usually done first. If this is positive, then a chest xray is usually requested. The civil surgeon usually will need to document in the physical exam form his/her recommendations. If the tuberculin test is negative, no further testing is indicated and this is documented in the form. If you have done this test (tuberculin skin test) then you should just provide documentation from the civil surgeon. If not, I believe you should have this done to avoid further delays.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

the TB test is not done in the exam abroad. I would think they would notice it if it were present in the first xray, but maybe not. Ning had a TB done when she went to the doctor here on a regular visit. The Dr. (also Thai) said that she should have it done because she comes from a third world country and its common to be exposed to it. Of course, the skin ####### was positive so she had a chest x-ray, which came out negative. The Dr had her take the medicine anyway which means one pill a day for nine months. I checked with my friend who is a Dr at NYU, and she said this is the normal procedure just to make sure.

I don't know why you were asked for it, or maybe they noticed something in the xray. What exactly does the RFE say?

Hi there

I hear what your saying I was also under the impression that there wasnt any more testing as my K3-K4 medicals were good for 1 year. Go figure however when sending in my immunisation sheet and all the paper work . They told me I needed a brand new medical which I had taken in Sydney in Nov 2005. Plus all my children had to do the same TB skin tests,Aids Syphilis the works. Extra money making scheme I say ... Mind you I didnt think a child under the age of 10 needed a TB test ??? Someone needs to get it right up stairs I believe. As all this has turned out to be is money making revenue venture. Plus you would think that because we pay all that money we get good service I dont beleive we do. Someone needs to look into that as well.

Anyway that is my gripe about that

Good luck on the tests

I believe they do ... Even though it wasn't immigration related, my husband's grandson had to get the TB skin test before going to preschool - and he is 4yo.

A child can catch tb just as easily (if not more so) than an adult... they can do a tb test on any child over the age of three.

I had the skin test done for my job (in a hospital) - it came back positive - I had told the nurse doing it that I have had immunisation against TB so it will come out positive (I was born in India and had been innoculated many times - there were always TB breakouts and all kids got them in the school or my parents took us to a local clinic.) So then they did an x-ray and that was that. I never had to take a pill and would not do so if I was told as I know more than some of the nurses/doctors do especially when it comes to my own history (even when I was just 26, I knew enough!)

I don't know why you were asked for it, or maybe they noticed something in the xray. What exactly does the RFE say?

First, thanks you all for the answers.

This is what the RFE says. (but it's not for that only reason that i got the RFE. we forgot to mail in my husbands birth cert....)

"All I-485 applicants 2 years older applying for AOS under the immigration and nationality act are required to have a tuberculin skin test. All I-485 applicants 15 years of age and older applying for AOS under imm. and nationality act are required to have a chest x-ray examination for tuberculosis, serologic testings for syphilis and HIV. "

The thing is i had the x-ray done and everything was fine with me. From what i understand they do the skin test first and when its positive they make you do the X-ray exam to check more.

I don't know. I wish they made the process a lot easier and we wouldn't always have to worry about doing things wrong..

Well Im not debating the fact that children at any age can get TB. Im mearly saying that we had already done all tests required by immigration from our own country(Australia) prior to filing for AOS. When it does state with immigration that our medicals are valid for 12 months. My family and myself had been examined prior to arriving which cost alot of money at the immigration doctor in my own country. Then we had to go along again to a doctor here and have all medicals done again (more money, time ,inconvienience)particulaly when the hubby has to take the day off to drive us 4 hrs to get a medical the kids have to miss school blah blah blah.I guess what it comes down to is, I appreciate that they need to check immigrants medical health but what happens to the paper work after you give it to the man at the immigration gate like my paper work its gone to immigration heaven. LOST IN SPACE....

Sorry but ive not faith in this system at all you get incorect information all the time you have to supply every thing twice and when trying to get information on your case is like pulling teeth I dont beleive that is very fair to individuals that have paid and have been waiting for months or years for a man behind a desk to say yes i beleive you have a real marriage and you can stay with your hubby ...

[...] Mind you I didnt think a child under the age of 10 needed a TB test ??? [...]

Babonsi : in Australia US immigration states children under the age of ten are not required to have a tb test done .

I've reached that realistic age where I have to choose between having fun and a heart attack :)
