Me& my then 6 year old daughter took 4 suitcases 2 backpacks , my big shopper handbag , a teddy bear for the plane & a a huge Aldi shopping bag(the sturdy ones) & there was my wedding dress bc i didn’t want it to get lost on the plane but my hands were full also to carry this big thing so I carfully folded it in that bag & had it as carry on as well , not to mention I had to carry all these things myself besides one backpack & a teddy bc my daughter was to small to lift the heavy luggage , luckily the ppl at the baggage claim were so nice to me & help me load up onto a cart , I had a stop at another airport but they transferred the suitcases already . Most of the stuff in there was my daughters my stuff which were some clothes the rest were toys & plush animals clothing for my child books keepsakes . I must say though I planned ahead, I came to the us in March but I visited my then fiancé the summer before & brought in most of my clothes & purses & left it there. Also my friend traveled to my husbands city du to work & I handed her over 1 suitcase so she could drop it off at him , this was a special suitcase bc it had all my daughters baby clothes & toys in them bc 1. We wanted more kids so it was convenient 2. I couldn’t let go :,( . So if you can plan ahead. We’re ended up needing the baby suitcase bc I fell pregnant shortly after we got married . Now our baby can come any day now :) good luck to everyone & if you can’t separate from something find a way to get it to you , it helps with home sickness!

I came over here with 2 suitcases, 2 carry ons and had sent 6 boxes a 20kg ahead.
Mostly clothes and memories.
I have sold/given away and thrown away everything else I have owned overseas.
Been living in my fully equipped household for 12 years. It's all gone.

This is a tough one for me.

I've already planned that I'll fit basically everything I want into 4 big suitcases/bags and my carry on: clothes/shoes/jewelry, a few books (most of mine are on my kindle now so I'll only take the ones that can't be replaced digitally), a few DVDs and a DVD player (because of region locking - and again, only the things I cannot get digital copies of), my PC in parts (I'll take it apart and wrap everything up and will use the case & power supply from my partner's spare PC for the time being), my pop culture stuff and framed pictures and such will all fit easily in 4 big bags.

The things that I can't fit in that are also things that I would be terrified to send on a ship due to the chance of breaking, but at the same time I very much want - all hugely sentimental: the china my parents got when they were married, a lamp that my dad made by hand, a tapestry my mum made my dad for one of their anniversaries, and a framed picture that I bought for my dad many years ago that he loved.  My parents are both dead now (both died young - my mum at 39 and my dad at 65) so I stuff is all I have left of them but I'm so worried about it breaking in transit and I can't bear to leave it behind.

Oh, and my cat (maybe.... I still don't know about this due to all the scary stories I have heard about animals being killed due to airline negligence, plus she is super old and I'm worried about her health in a massively different climate).

But the rest of my junk... eh. I couldn't care less. I'm planning to try to sell most of it, offer my friends the chance to take anything they want/need from what I can't sell, then donate anything left (besides the obvious stuff that needs to be tossed out).

Wife basically brought 4 suitcase full of clothes/shoes/small personal mementoes along with her dog to the US. This was made possible because I was with her and she took my allotted 2 bags.

I had left my extra change of clothes in her place during my previous visits and only needed a backpack on my way back to the US.

I would say don't take the cat. My bunny rabbit is almost 10 years old and she is nearly totally blind. I am leaving her in the care of my Mum. I wouldn't risk the flight. Small animals cant cope, especially when they are elderly.

Yeah thats what I'm leaning towards, sadly. She's 12 this year so she's getting up there for a cat (most live 13-17 years) and it would be so traumatic for her... but then she's really attached to me and I'm paranoid that it'll be traumatic no matter what.  She'd go to live with my brother and be with her "sisters" that she lived most of her life with (until a few years ago when I moved) so we shall see how it goes.

This is an interesting topic!

My fiancé is not very materialistic and has moved long distance multiple times in the past. He plans on bringing a carry on to carry important stuff, like important papers, and paid for an extra checked bag so he'll have two large suitcases coming with him. For him, it's mostly clothes. The last time he came to visit, we already knew what our intentions were so he left a lot of clothes and belongings home with me during that trip. Most of what he's bringing back with him this last time is the rest of his clothes and some personal items, like pictures and such. There are some things I'm sure he wouldn't mind having, but he views it as it's just as easy/costs the same to just buy new stuff once he's here. Fortunately for us, him being from Sweden, a lot of his general household items came from places similar to Ikea, and we have one of those in North Carolina and will stock back up on things when he's here.

I think he plans to bring some prepackaged food specific to Sweden with him, but he always does that whenever he visits anyway.

Håll ut, y'all.

I plan on taking some clothes and donate the rest to make room for my favorite souvenirs I have been collecting for years! Each one of them bring back sweet memories of all the trips I have made. Luckily, you can find anything you want in the states so I'll just focus on my certificates, diplomas,  employment paperwork, souvenirs....and MONEY haha

Have to leave my pup behind, It makes me sad but I know that is the best decision for now...
