What are you taking with you to the US?

I'm curious- question to all the VJ K1 applicants - once the K1 visa is approved and you travel to your POE - what will you be taking to the US with you / your fiance bringing to the US?

Just suitcases of clothes/personal items?
Furniture/household items?

Larger things?

*~*~*moved from "K-1 fiancé visa" to "moving to America" - not a visa procedure question*~*~*

I came on a IR-1 from the U.K. I was able to bring two suitcases on the plane. It was December and we live in Washington state so I had mostly winter clothes with me. Summer clothes and 30 crates of books went by ship and arrived here 4 months after me.

Suitcases holding immediate needs and important papers. Valuables in carryon. Twenty something boxes and a crated family heirloom sent by ship (1-2 months). No electronics/electrical things except the insides of a desktop computer (new case  with power supply in US) and laptop that would work on US current with a new cord.

My husband purchased the ability to carry extra luggage with him. I think he had four bags in total + a carry on and a backpack. He took just about everything he could fit in -clothing, books, dvds, games, figurines, and electronics. He purchased additional insurance on the electronic items. He put these in his carry on even if he had to lug them out to put them through the scanners.

This question fascinates me as many people come from all over the world. Not everyone has the economic or logistical resources to move their belongings.

For those who only arrived with a couple of suitcases weren't you severely home sick? When I visit the US with a couple suitcases all I can think about is being reunited with "my stuff". I don't even consider myself a hoarder.

I wonder if there is a correlation between how much stuff one brings and how homesick a person feels after arriving.

It is so interesting isn't it !! I often think about all the different things people take / leave behind. Some people moving the contents of their home, some arriving with a couple of bags.

Personally I will be taking 3 extra large size suitcases and 1 medium, all on the plane with me. I have no belongings that will require shipping as I'm currently selling / giving away all my furniture.

As for getting home sick, the US will slowly transition into the feeling of 'home'  :)

I brought a bunch of stuff. I wasn't homesick one day.

Other considerations--Those with lots of mates and fresh out of school have more social life they leave behind perhaps, so miss that buzz of activity.  Some that live with parents don't own that much anyway and don't have to make a decision to bring or get rid of forever.  They leave it with Mum. I had to leave my place totally empty so brought everything I thought I may want to see again, use again, or read again.

I'd suggest...don't leave your whole life and memories behind just to save a few quid.

I'm already an expat so most of my things from first 20 years of my life is packed in my parents house (and I know they lost most while moving...)

but i I have lots of clothes and shoes and etc.

i left all furniture apart front things I bought on travels (mostly as my fiancé calls them knickknacks)

and all all the rest has been already moved on every travel we made to US. He only brings a few clothes every time and takes 2 full luggage of mine, and I always left whatever I took with me in that vacation. Now I have only 1 left and intending to fill the other one with some new things for our home.

Shoes was the biggest problem... because of their shape I believe took 4-5 suitcases and still left some...

books are mostly sold... and was the saddest part.. but I just had too many!

My wife was from the Philippines,  It made no sense to try to move anything to the USA it would of cost too much in shipping cost.  Just leave what she had for her family or friends.

She was still living at home, so not much she had anyways to transport.

My wife came with a little more than one suitcase.  Sadly left a wonderful collection of books behind.

She knew her rich American husband would buy her everything her heart desired.  That was more than 10 years ago and I am still paying....

I love it...........

You should see the collection of shoes and high end dresses she has.  We had to make a new huge walk in closet just for her clothes.
