Hi,

what are people doing about interim health insurance once they arrive but before they have a social security number? I am assuming that travel insurance is not valid as I'm not there on a tourist visa. I've heard of short term cover aimed at 'immigrants' , anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks

The easiest thing for you to do is to file for your SSN literally days after arriving in country. Then get married and be put on your spouse's insurance coverage. But if that isn't possible then use travel insurance.

Travel Insurance would not work, SSN not needed.

You do not need an SSN to get health insurance

YMMV

An SSN is not required to obtain health insurance. That being said, it would be in your best interests to obtain an SSN asap to avoid hassle on the subject (follow the SSN guide on this website).

If you are healthy, with no pressing medical need of it, you have a short window to go without health insurance. Get your SSN done, marry, and then either have the spouse add you to their plan, buy a plan privately through an insurer in your state, or use Obamacare (you will need to at least apply for AOS by that time though). So the first two options are really the easiest and fastest ones.

Short term insurances are not federally compliant insurances. Coverage is dubious at best, pre-existings may not be covered, the penalty will still apply (even though the rules are changing for that). There are some that use them though. Travel insurances are not for you, as you are not a visitor.

So my fiancee is coming from Belgium and I am a student in Texas and I am currently on my parents insurance.... what happens when he moves & we get married? How would we both obtain healthcare coverage?

I am looking for a job for after I graduate in May but in the meantime would it be illegal for us to go without healthcare for some months?

(Sorry I am only 22 and I seriously dont understand healthcare yet)

i bought my interim insurance from these guys. we did not have grand expectations with it but it should suffice for catastrophic / emergencies but thank god, i did not have to use it. i only had to be on it for a month and as soon as i was added to my husband's insurance plan at work, then we cancelled this one. pretty straightforward and it was easy to cancel.

It is not illegal to not have health insurance. If you don't have health insurance then you are required to pay the fine in taxes. Plenty of people do that for a variety of reasons. Next tax season this payment is likely not to even exist anymore. You will likely be unable to cover your fiancé on your parent's insurance. If you are remaining on that until you find a job that offers insurance, you could always purchase insurance for your fiancé from anyone that offers in your state after you marry. Once you find a job and obtain your own insurance, you can add the fiancé to that The same things I mentioned in the post above are the same things I'd recommend for anyone.

It is important to study as much as you can about health insurance, as your foreign spouse will rely on you to help guide them through a process that can be frustratingly different for them. It's also important to consider the high cost factor involved in paying monthly premiums. Even without insurance you can still seek care if you're willing to pay out of pocket.
