My wife came here a couple years ago on k1.  We just had our son, born here in the US. Her passport is expiring soon (Feb 2019), we plan on pursuing naturalization when available, roughly next year.

Should I go through the trouble of extending her passport even though we just filed i751 ROC (filed Jan 2018) and then maybe do n400 naturalization (apply Jan 2019) (before 751 is done and paying that fee maybe no reason? if she gets naturalized before her GC is extended)

Does my son need a VN passport? (He doesn't have a US one yet either) He's clearly a USC being born here.

My wife just went back over Xmas, and we (I certainly dont anyway) have any plans anytime soon to return again.

Why would your son need a VN passport? He certainly does not NEED one but your wife can get him one if she wants as a Dual Citizen if Vietnam allows that. If you have no plans to go back anytime soon then just wait and file for Naturalization this year and then get a US passport as well.

Filed: IR-1/CR-1 Visa Country: Vietnam
Timeline

Your son is US citizen, and you can get one for him if you want. If you want your son stay in VN less than 6 month, get him a VN visa. More than 6 month, get him a VN passport.
