Taxes, O Taxes

Here's a question.

I'm a full time nursing student, and work for pennies at the campus library a few hours a week.

I just did my taxes and figured that I will get precisely $29.55 for my refund.

That fact, combined with my complete and utter confusion about (and fear of screwing up) how I handle my husband's foreign income when filing jointly (as well as his current lack of a SSN due to the slow SSA) makes me not want to file, since I'm way below the "you must file because you make over this much money/year" line.

I'm wondering, though--is there any reason (probably USCIS-related) why I should file a tax return? We're in the middle of AOS right now and I used my 2004 tax returns so I'm good there (plus my mother is the main sponsor, really), but I was just wondering whether it's an integral part of any other paperwork. By the time we do lifting conditions in 2 years I will have filed our 2006 tax return so at least I will have the most recent year's tax returns.

Any comments about this?

Oh yeah, and if he made (once pounds are converted to dollars) enough money in the UK to be in the "you must file taxes" bracket HERE, does he have to file here (even though he's already filed in the UK)?

:crying: I hate taxes.

Hi kyleers, I would advise you and your husband to read Publication 519 on the IRS website (you can get html and pdf copies). It is the US Tax Guide For Aliens and contains all you need to know (supposedly). I also have UK income that I paid taxes on in 2005 and am still trying to sort out the best way for my wife and I to file.

Good luck.

I would definitely advise against not filing.

If you're having trouble, I'd either go to a tax preparation place or find a CPA. It may cost you a little $ but it would be worth it knowing it was done correctly. There's no way I'm doing my taxes for the year that Chas moves here without my CPA!!
