Viewers approve of Trump's first State of the Union address - CBS News poll

Overall I did like the speech. But it saddened me and my wife when he spoke about the teenagers that died because of MS13. The parents sitting there sobbing remembering their children and how they died really made me sad because I have 4 children(3 girls and 1 son), all I kept thinking was what if that was us. I am sure the parents are glad that something is being done too, just like Jamiel Shaw's father is glad that something is FINALLY being done about Illegals.

Looks like they would be happy Black unemployment is at its lowest ever. #poverty Pimps

They are just pandering fools who would rather keep black people down and out in the fields beholden to the Masters of the Democrat party than successful.

Nothing more than political theatre, emotional yes but it'll do nothing to bring both sides together to solve the problem.

I didn't actually watch it myself, though I actually can't remember the last SOTU that I have actually watched live. I'll usually either watch it later, or read a transcript. I've never been one to specifically go out of my way to catch a politician speaking on pretty much any topic. The only big "speech" event that we consistently watch in our household is The Queen's Christmas Address. That just gives you warm fuzzies :)

From the transcript the speech had everything you would expect. A positive message, reports of positive change, personal examples of people that they brought to the speech to produce warm feelings. I wouldn't have expected any less. Obviously he took his fair share of "I want credit for things that I didn't have anything to do with", which again is exactly as expected. Did he exaggerate a lot of things? Of course he did, but again that is always present in these speeches. No President stands up in front of all of Congress and says "We did pretty good. We've enacted changes that were pretty big, not the biggest, but pretty big.". They all exaggerate and take credit for things.

These speeches are nice, but as others have suggested I'd still prefer a lot more consistency from our President. If he wants to call for cooperation, finding common ground etc that has to be something that is actually done, and not just talked about in a big speech. I still think he needs to stop the personal attacks and rebuttals on twitter. He needs to take the high road. If people want to be negative just ignore them. He is the President now, and should be above that. It's like he has split personalities and I would overall have a much higher approval of him if he just stuck to his "Speech Making Persona" and dropped the "Campaigning persona" and the "Twitter persona". I realize that is hard for him because those likely help him maintain support in his base, but I don't think they help him attract more moderate people.

I'll openly admit that for me things are overall better now than I had expected they would be 1 year ago (not just for me personally but for the country as a whole). I was never one of the people claiming complete "doom and gloom", and I do remember saying even the day after he was elected that if anything was going to go well, it would be the economy. I do think it was rather two-faced for members of the audience to be silent during purely objective improvements in our economy (the unemployment rates for African Americans). It doesn't matter who is in office, or how much you dislike him, that is still good news and should be welcomed. The economy is thriving, and that is a good thing. Yes I think you could question how much Trump is responsible for that, but I don't really care about who gets credit for it. I just care about the results.

Of course there are things in the speech I disagree with, and there are many things I disagree with the President about. That won't change. I find the issues of "Religious Liberty" mostly two-faced. I find most of those issues have absolutely nothing to do with freedom of religion, but just attempts to morally dictate to people who have a difference of opinion.  I don't see the repeal of the individual mandate as a good thing, especially without a full rehash of the healthcare system. I think that should have been left out of the tax reform and saved for a true healthcare reform bill. I'm also hopeful (maybe ignorantly) for some cooperation on the immigration front. Trump's plan involving granting a path for DACA recipients in exchange for funding and immigration reform is actually a good starting place, in my opinion. I hope more negotiation (friendly negotiation) will come from that.

Sorry that was a little long winded...especially for someone who didn't actually watch it. Pretty standard for my posts though I guess ;)

I think we agree on more things than we both think, there are just certain things we disagree on strongly. You are a very prolific "thread starter" of Pro-Trump articles, I think in large part because you like to try to get a rise out of people. I try my best to stay more moderated in my response to things (good and bad), but I can get heated sometimes I admit.

I'm trying to strike a better balance moving forward in my life (New Years resolution I guess?).

In the highlights of what I saw -

Vague mentions of infrastructure with no idea of how to pay for it.

Religious liberty mentions were kind of disturbing as well as implying firing a person based upon their beliefs.

Lying about immigration once again. But who cares because no average person will bother to investigate that.

Ji-Seong-Ho appeared. That was a great moment. I hope he understands that he wouldn't be here if certain plans are enacted.

Best part of the speech was the end of the speech, where he turned slightly more rational and modulated the tone of his voice.

Melania arrived solo and was wearing all white. Oh the shade.

I don't think that Stephen Miller would find his presence here in any capacity acceptable. But this is the SOTU, where all varieties of people are used as optic pawns for brownie points.
