Hi everyone! I am US Citizen and my mother is visiting me on her tourist visa in two months. She will stay here for 3 months. During her stay here, we were thinking to take a week trip to Mexico. Does anybody know how the procedure entering back to US would look like? Would she have any problems? Maybe  somebody was in situation like this before and could share their experiences? Thank you all in advance.

I also want to know about it. When my sister came here in the US to visit me, we went to New York and visit the Niagara Falls. My sister got a tourist visa  with a 10 years multiple entry visa. My  daughter and I are US Citizen. We want to cross the border  to Canada because we want to see the Niagara Falls in Canada side.  I told my sister maybe she can just go to the middle of the bridge to see the Niagara Falls in Canada side but my sister just stayed in the USA side because she doesn't want to have problem coming back to the USA. I hope someone can share their experience about it because when my sister will visit me again, we want to go to Mexico.

I would think entering Mexico would be the issue, not coming back to the USA on tourist visa.

I’m not sure I understand what the concern is.

For many countries who need a visa for Mexico, an exemption is made for people with valid US visas (or green cards), easily checked online to confirm her particular case.

The process coming back into the US is like any other entry. You present your documents. If she has a passport with valid visa, she should be fine.

....I'm assuming all this is a genuine trip and the week in Mexico is not simply an attempt to reset the 6 months’ validity  of a tourist visa ...if CBP have any reason to suspect this is the case (For example the trip to Mexico happens 5 months into a tourist visa visit) then there could be an issue. From the times you have given this shouldn’t be a problem though.

Why did your sister think there would be a problem re-entering if she had a valid visa?

by the way do Filipinos require visas for Canada? That might have been an issue of course if she didn’t have one.

Thanks for reply. Thats why I'm looking into getting trip in the middle of her stay here in US not towards the end of her stay.  I wasn't sure how the procedure works. No, she is not looking into resetting her 6 months stay. She doesn't need visa to Mexico.

I assume she will need a visa, a trip to MExico does not reset the I 94.

She is a citizen of a country that doesn't require tourist visa to Mexico. I just needed to know if there may be any problems reentering to US to finish her 3 months vacation in US. Like I mentioned before we are planning to take a week trip to Mexico in the middle of her 3 months stay in US.

Yes and here is the official CBP page, OP this should also give you reassurance:

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/751/~/traveling-to-other-countries-while-in-the-u.s.-on-a-b1-or-b2-visa

B-1 or B-2 Visas:  During your visit to the U.S., you may visit Canada or Mexico for up to 30 days and re-enter the U.S. as long as you re-enter within the period noted on the Form I-94 which you received when you first entered.

So basically to get into Mexico or Canada would depend on your passport, and if they require a visa in either Mexico or Canada.

Yes, my sister has a valid 10 years multiple entry  US visa. She's a permanent resident in New Zealand. During her visit for some reason we did not check this site if there would be any problem re-entering the US.  My husband and I always go to Mexico to have our dental implants. We stayed at the hotel in the US side and we just walk and cross the border in the morning and come back to the US in the afternoon. My sister will visit me again and we are planning to cross the border to Mexico by walking and come back to the US in the afternoon. We can enter Mexico by walking with no problem, they won't check but coming back in the US, they will check everybody.

Thanks for all this information. I really appreciate it.
