My husband never had a driver's liscence prior to coming here. Later on, once he has his green card, I'll get him a driver's permit and we can start practicing driving. Biking to college in the dead of winter probably won't be fun for him.

But I understand the differences in driving. He's made all sorts of comments about things. As for the 'ride side hand priority rule' it still applies, but only when two cars come to a stopsign at the same time. At least that's what I learned.

I lived in capital city and car would be to expensive with garage and our gas prices, I rather 5 minute walk to job or spend few lats for cab. So I drove only very occasionally. I needed to learn to drive very hard again, because my hubby is very hard on me driving good, and thanks him, I am very aware driver now. But Netherlands is very big cyclist land, many cyclists you can see in Latvia too, and in all seasons. Crazy them. lol.

By the way, don't he have his cyclist ID, you need to have this if you rode your bike in cities.

I don't think he had to get a cyclist ID, at least not from what he's told me. He's been cycling to school since he was a small child. I know he lived in Amsterdam for a while, but I'm not sure he rode his bike while there. He was only at that university for a year or so.

Amsterdam! One of cities I surely will visit in my lifetime. :) I heard this is full of bicycles. I had a friend who went there and they rent bicycles very cheap. Maybe this is so common, that you don't need cyclist drivers license.

We know someone who came the same time my husband and was told he cannot get his permit since his I-94 expires next week.

However, a friend of mine who has been illegal in the U.S. for years has just applied for her AOS (due to marriage) and was given her license (after the test) with only her NOA.

We'll take his passport, I-94, Florida ID (the best form of ID in the U.S. - just like a license), the NOAs for AOS & EAD, and we'll take proof of biometrics.

I think we'll be ok since our friend was ok taking her NOA for AOS w/ her.

If not, we can go to another county and try.

I got my CA ID and Social Security card/number in 2004 already (I came as an F1 student). The only thing I have to do is take care of the name change. I went to the DMV and SS office 4 weeks ago to change my name but they told me to come back when I have my greencard. I guess that had to do with the fact that my OPT EAD (Optional Practical Training) was about to expire....

It was only valid for another 2 weeks...they told me if I had come earlier they could have changed it (of course I couldn't come earlier b/c I had to get married first, lol, also I waited for the NOA1)...as said above now I have to wait for my greencard...

SO my understanding it that almost everywhere, they issue you a DL that expires at the same time of you I-94, UNLESS you have applied for AOS/EAD and have the NOA...

THing is last time we went to DMV for my husband's change of address, i asked the lady up front about my case and about DL expiration date, and she said she didnt know and gave me a little book with all the informations.....same as on their website. (Illinois) THing is other than what are the requirement (DL and written test) and the ID i need....they dont mention anything about the validity period of the DL depending on where you are in your immigration process.

So now I have this

K-1 + I-94 still valid for 5 weeks

SSN in my married name

Wedding certificate

Valid Driver license from Canada

NOA of AOS and EAD

Should I try to go or drive on my canadian license until my I-94 expires and then get a DL when I get my EAD ?

im confused

You know - really, seems its up to each state, and everyone here says something different from different state. I know that I am ok for year with my Latvian (European Union DL), and then I will have my GK already, then I will apply for PA drivers license. You better call and find out about your state.

Can you call your local DMV?

Surprising enough, the one I called has always had helpful women on the other line.

My husband does have his SSN and because he's a male he didn't have to worry about name changes.

As far as it seems - in some states, you can get your DL w/ an expired I-94...as long as you have the NOA for AOS/EAD. I'm brining the proof of biometrics too - just in case.

Foreign License Holders: Pennsylvania honors a valid foreign driverʼs license with an international driving

permit for a period of up to one (1) year. If the foreign license and/or international driving permit expire before one (1) year, the individual must apply for a Pennsylvania learnerʼs permit to continue to drive in this state. All holders of foreign licenses must apply for a Pennsylvania learnerʼs permit if they wish to obtain a Pennsylvania

driverʼs license. Reciprocity agreements exist with the countries of France and Germany allowing for the transfer

of a valid non-commercial driverʼs license without road or knowledge testing; a visual screening test will be

administered. (Transfer of a driverʼs license from France or Germany cannot be completed the same day.)

The guy we know was told by the DMV that he cannot get his license now because his I-94 expires next week and they had not submitted their AOS paperwork yet.

We had to wait to take the driving test as we had applied for a ID card. WE told them to cancel the Id card and give us the licence instead, they said NO.

The NOA allows them to issue a Drivers lic. in the married name, still only good till the I-94 expires.

My BB passed her florida test yesterday and was given a piece of paper valid for thirty days. the licence will arrive first week in July and expire on July 8th (same as I94)

When we recieve AOS we will then renew it.

This is what has been told to us so far by Florida DMV.

So how was my friend able to get her license (which does not expire any time soon) with her AOS NOA?

Her mom brought her to this country (illegally) years and years ago. She has lived in the U.S. since elementary school (if not before that). Now she is grown up, married, and has applied for her AOS....she's done the biometrics - but was able to get her license even before that.

No approval (yet).

11/2004 - Met in Brazil

09/2006 - Apply for K1

04/2007 - Apply for AOS & EAD

01/2008 - Conditional Residency approved

11/2009 - Apply to remove conditions
