I still use my Latvia drivers license. Its valid one year. Actually it was smart, because Its got it in 2000, so when they added me to insurance, they considered I have driving experience, and I am added as secondary driver for free. If I would get my PA drivers license it would be new, with driving experience 0, and insurance would be - I don't want to even think how much.

I never got any kind of ID here, do I need one? So far I did everything with my passport.

We mostly got the State ID for safety sake. With my husband cycling to school every day, I didn't want to risk him misplacing his passport. So we got him the State ID so that he can have that with him as his primary ID, and we don't have to drag around the passport everywhere.

I am studying for my written drivers test now...such a pain in the butt. I also have to take the 2 part in-car exam as well. My I-94 expires June 29th, I hope they let me get the license still! There are reciprocal driving privledges betweeen U.S. and Canada for 1 year, but that only applies to tourists...I am praying I don't get into any trouble!

This reminds me, I need to go and get all that stuff from the BMV (I'm sure I printed it out somewhere, but can I find it? No!)... won't be able to get my state ID card 'til I get the hard copy of my NOA (and hope they won't give me any grief 'cos it has my mother-in-law's address on it)... sounds like learning to drive and attempting to get my licencte before my I-94 expires might be a good plan. Although perhaps not possible... I don't even have a licence in the UK, so it might take me a while.

Any idea how difficult/easy the written test is? I hope you manage to take the tests & get your licence without any hassle...

But I understand the differences in driving. He's made all sorts of comments about things. As for the 'ride side hand priority rule' it still applies, but only when two cars come to a stopsign at the same time. At least that's what I learned.

I heard a rumour that you must get all the ID (SSN, DL, etc) done 14 days prior to the expiry of your I-94, otherwise they won't issue it to you. I think if we have our AOS NOA1, we should be fine. I'll still try. I was planning to go this week, but I got sick, so maybe next week. I am currently making flash cards to study from. I am a big dork! I am more worried about the in-car test. There's this weird maneuverability test that you have to do!

I took the practice test online and in the back of the manual and it was pretty easy (common sense). If you have a brain and some logical reasoning capabilities (which I know you do because you were able to do all the AOS paperwork!!) then you'll be fine!

I lived in capital city and car would be to expensive with garage and our gas prices, I rather 5 minute walk to job or spend few lats for cab. So I drove only very occasionally. I needed to learn to drive very hard again, because my hubby is very hard on me driving good, and thanks him, I am very aware driver now. But Netherlands is very big cyclist land, many cyclists you can see in Latvia too, and in all seasons. Crazy them. lol.

By the way, don't he have his cyclist ID, you need to have this if you rode your bike in cities.

Ah, I did that online test the other day and got about 80% of the questions right, I think, which was pretty good going considering I was just guessing the answers on most of them! I'll get a copy of the manual from the BMV, or clerk's office, or whatever that place is called, and see what I can get done before the I-94 expires (late July) just to be on the safe side. I knew about that 14-days rule for the SSN, and was wondering whether or not it would apply for the drivers licence/state ID too. I probably won't know what rules they're going to enforce 'til I try... on the two occasions I called to find out what documents I'd need to get a state ID, I was told that my passport, visa, SSN & I-94 were all I'd need... then when I tried to apply, they suddenly decided I needed 'an I-797' too. So, hopefully next week...

Hope you're not feeling too blah & that you're better soon! :)

I don't think he had to get a cyclist ID, at least not from what he's told me. He's been cycling to school since he was a small child. I know he lived in Amsterdam for a while, but I'm not sure he rode his bike while there. He was only at that university for a year or so.

here is my situation, i have my license from Canada. But i read that in Illinois you are allowed to drive only 90 days with an out-of-state license.

I got my SSN and i still have like 5 weeks on my I-94. And they told me i need only to do my written exam to change my license for an Illinois license.

But here is my question. I was told that when you apply on a I-94, the driver license expires at the same time as your I-94. Then if you re apply with EAD, the license expires with EAD, and same with green card. So i thought it would be useless to pay for a license that expires in 5 weeks because i can still drive on my canadian license. I was planning on waiting for EAD to go get my license. Anyone else had experience with getting a license on a K-1 that has a longest expiration date?

Or with my NOA1 from AOS and EAD is it enough to get a license for a longer period of time ?
