Renewing a TX DL with a I-551 with no expiration

Hey all,

First, I'm aware that my current predicament is all on me, but anyways.

I am a permanent resident, with an old I-551 that has no expiration date which I got when I was a kid about 20 years ago. Per my research this is a valid green card still, and I never had any issues (though I don't have to show it often). I finally applied to renew and get a new one last May, but from what I understand I may be waiting longer than a year to receive my new card.

In the meantime my DL has expired. I need to go renew it, but I'm afraid I won't be able to because of the picture in the card. Again, I had no issues renewing my license 4 years ago, but I'm afraid too much time has passed and of course, today's current climate with immigration.

Has anyone been in the same position lately and been able to renew their license?

Are you sure your green card was issued 20 years ago? According to the CBP website Green Cards issued between 1979 and August 1989 don't have an expiration date.

Do you have any other government ID with your photo and name? A foreign passport? According to customs if they cannot determine you are the child in the photo they can request other methods to determine your identity. I would presume the DMV would have a similar policy.

The fact your DL has expired doesn't look good and you have a green card from decades ago. This is just my opinion but your case could set off flags for stolen identity.

Just checked, and my Green card was issued in August 1989, so right under the wire. It's def the one that has no expiration date anywhere.

And sadly I don't, I haven't had a need for anything else except my license and I guess my social security card.

Like I said, I know its my fault. I didn't realize the process to renew the green card would take so long, so waiting till the last minute to finally renew it was a huge mistake
