Hello everyone, hope you are doing fine

i have a friend residing in the US now and told me that the program will be shutdown for good soon

as i understood that there will be NO DV2020 and instead government shall apply new system or method for immigration

for example like immigration to Canada or Australia ... ETC

just wanted to ask since this is the DV forum and since many of you might be there, is this true story ?

There is a bill in the House of Representatives which is Congress that would end the DV lottery at this time. But it has not been passed at this time. But be advised that this topic is a heated topic right now and more than likely it will end.

No one knows for sure.  However, the Diversity Lottery is "low hanging fruit" in my opinion.  I think the DV lottery is all but dead.......

When the DV lottery is gone, the Government will not start another program.....our immigration system is headed toward fewer immigrants and a merit based system.  There will be no new program.  By the way, the US government has no influence in a person's  immigrating to Canada or Australia .

As above nothing is final but DV has no champions, I’d be surprised to even see DV2019 much less 2020. If the law changes before the May draw date, DV2019 will certainly be dead in the water.

lots of talk about merit based system but no real concrete suggestions yet. Ironically of course, other than direct employment based visas, DV immigrants are on average significantly better educated than the general immigrant pool, most of which is family based. The DV skills requirements are not that high, but they are still there, which is not true of family based visas, and research shows many DV immigrants are college educated and get pretty good jobs.

i meant that the immigration process will be like these countries, applying online with degrees and points based on your skill

well the Merit based system i guess is good, but many points has to be checked, for example US is giving yearly 85000 H1B visa, now on the new system for immigration, well only they give to 50000 (as the DV ) or it will be open to everyone who collect the points ?

all these could be better or worse and no one has any idea what is coming.

I am applying for jobs in the US for almost a year now, had many interviews with honestly GREAT salary and benefits, the only issue of rejection that i am not allowed to work in the US.

H1B visas are not immigrant visas. They are work visas, with a lot of restrictions, that may or may not lead to the visa holder getting a green card.  EB visas are employment based immigrant visas.

no-one at this stage has any clue what the proposed merit based system will look like, trump has apparently said he likes the Canadian/Australian systems, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.
