Yellow gold is soooo 80s :P

My engagement ring is white gold, just a simple diamond solitare. My wedding band is a row of diamonds also in white gold, it looks so cute together. If you've seen Rachel Ray's (the chick that does cooking in 30 min shows) set, that's what mine looks like. My husband has a thick white gold band.

Platinum not only is usually 3 times more expensive than gold, but also scratches more easily, and darkens. My jeweler said that you can't adjust the size of platinum, so once you get the ring, you pray that your fingers never loose or gain weight :P

Wow, so omG what a leap from the ORLY bird to an engagement ring modeled after a man stretching out his butthole.

I thought it was a very pretty ring, KC...but I can't look at it anymore, lol

But hey, you love it so that's all that matters!

I love my internet meme ring (L) I told ya, we're geeks at heart :) (I don't love the meme itself I may be silly, but not that silly)

From what I read it wasn't really modled after him, it was a bastardization of the Claddagh ring. Somewhere out there someone made the comparison and now that website has all the free advertising in the world because people keep posting links to it. Must be one of their top sellers!

I do love it, out of everyone that sees it, half get the refrence right away and the other half think it's just a beautiful ring. He's also told me to think if it as the hold I have on his heart.

We were also thinking about black titanium wedding bands with TROGDOR!!! engraved on them :)

We decided to shop around for my ring while i am on vacation in Israel ( which is now) Israel has a LOT of jewelry stores but the first day when i came in we went outside to buy me a calling card to call my parents and we passed by one jewelry store. (Everyone told us that it's better to buy gold from Israel because this is where the gold and diamonds are coming from to USA) They had a ring EXACTLY what i had in my mind that i liked and i knew that no matter how many stores we will shop around we will come back to this store. After a week of looking we did come back to that store and gave deposit yesterday. I also chose a matching wedding band. Those 2 rings are my dream!!!

We have also found a gorgeous wedding band for him and will go to the store ( other store) to pick it up sometimes next week.

So my ring should be ready by the beginning of the next week and i can't wait!!!

So white gold for us!

That's not true! I had my engagement ring sized smaller & it's platinum. It's softer than white gold but is resistant to scratches for far longer than gold. Also, platinum will not tarnish. Your jeweler was wrong!

We got yellow gold wedding ring - no diamond or anything - yellow gold so that it matched a ring with small diamond that I always wear that my grandma gave to me when I was in college.

Hubby does not care whether it is white or yellow or platinum or silver. He would believe it even if I said it is yellow silver - I think

A Practical Guide to the difference between Platinum and White Gold.

Posted by Cleve under Jewelry Talk!

Unless you have a severe allergic reaction to either metal-the choice is mostly preferential. Both metals have strengths and weaknesses, however there are a few variables to be considered when making your decision.

First, it’s important to understand that while virtually all Platinum Jewelry is 95% Platinum, Gold comes in a variety of mixtures. The most common are 10k (41.7% gold), 14k (58.3% gold), and 18k (75% gold). 24k (100% gold) is too soft to use for jewelry. Also, all Gold is yellow. There is no such thing as natural white Gold. Gold is made to look white by alloying (mixing) it with white metals, then plating it with Rhodium (in the Platinum family).

The main difference between Platinum and white Gold is price. Pure Platinum costs roughly twice as much as pure Gold. And because there is a higher percentage of Platinum used (95% versus 75% for 18k gold) in making jewelry, the same design can cost more than twice as much in Platinum than it does in Gold.

So, beyond price-what is the real difference between white Gold and Platinum?

Preference!

Both metals have different benefits, and determining which set of benefits is most attractive to you is largely preferential. So, here is a breakdown of the real differences:

Platinum wears better than Gold. When you scratch it, you’re actually just rearranging the metal as opposed to removing it. You can wear a Platinum ring for 80 years, and it won’t wear out. You may have to repair a Gold ring to add material where it has worn off over time.

BUT, Platinum is softer. This means that it will bend and scratch easier than white Gold. And because it’s softer, Platinum will lose its polish and appear dull faster than white Gold.

You’re more likely to bend the Platinum prongs holding a diamond than if they were made of white Gold. However, you will need to have your white Gold prongs re-tipped over time as they are more likely to wear down than Platinum prongs- TOUCHE!

Platinum is naturally white, while white Gold will need to be Rhodium plated every few years to maintain it’s bright white appearance. BUT, because white Gold is harder, it will maintain that shiny polished look longer than Platinum will. THRUST-PARRY

As you can see, there is no clear cut winner in this contest. Personally, I give the edge to white Gold-but only because affordability is one of my main priorities. If your priority is longevity without wear, you might select Platinum. If maintaining a shiny polish is more important than maintaining a bright white color, Gold may be the way to go.

So in conclusion, the answer to this age old question can only be:

Never play leapfrog with a unicorn.

Mine is white gold! We got it at an antique store and had it re finished then dipped in...rohdium (spelling) so that it matched the wedding band which is NOT an antique.

My wedding band matches I think it was Mags...with the diamonds across the front.

I am an antique-y kinda girl so my ring is fantstic for me!!

Chris though...he is going for a plain band..one that won't get damaged all that easy. IN WHITE GOLD.

Mine's yellow gold, the traditional one but the stone is 2-carat ruby instead of a diamond. I do have pieces of diamonds around it, in squares and baguettes. :luv::luv::luv:

Haven't bought my fiancee the diamond ring engagement ring yet. I got her a simple gold band which has sentimental value behind it. It's very "yellow" as it's 23 karat. I will get her a diamond engagement ring soon though. It will be a diamond solitaire with a yellow gold band.
