USA citizen married Brazilian in Brazil, divorced in the USA

I married a Brazilian in Brazil in 1988.  Divorced in the USA in 2000.  According to Brazilian law we are still married here in Brazil. I have returned to care for my mom and we are preparing her will.  My ex-wife because we are still married here is entitled to part of my inheritance.  My certified divorce agreement was lost in a fire.  I still have the Marriage certificate.  Divorce records in the US are public but only I can get a certified divorce decree in the USA, but I am stuck here in Brazil.  Anyone been in this situation?  There are no minor children. I am lost and need help.

Write or call the county where you have your divorce certificate at and have them send you a certified copy. You are technically divorced in Brazil too you just need to get the documents to get it acknowledged. Also ask the county to give you an apostille along with the decree.

Completely agree... you can call to get process (or find instructions online for larger counties). You can mail the the request with payment and once received file the documents in Brazil to record the divorce. I would write the will as though the former spouse does not exist in this case. Just file divorce records before the will with the courts.

I`m from Brazil but not entirely sure i understood your request. I believe you can go to the Cartório (any) and request your Divorce certificate.
