Hi everyone,

my citizenship interview is getting closer (still waiting for the date, but already scheduled).

I'm wondering what is the best way (faster and safer) to apply for a passport. Right after the oath ceremony (when possible) or later on at the post office ?.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Don''t forget about your local public libraries, I went in and out in 5 minutes, walk-in, no appointment, no lines etc.

In Chicago, you cannot apply right after unless it is emergency, thats what we were told during our ceremony.

I am kinda surprised to hear that Chicago folks told you that. I just went through my oath and there was no mention of not able to apply for a passport the same day. Legally, i do not see an issue at all. In fact, I had already setup my appointment (USPS) for the same afternoon when I took oath and I was able to submit my application for pp. All in same day.

I was somewhat paranoid about sending in my nat cert in for a passport without something else in hand that could be used to show my citizenship, especially since I know I (still) need to get a certified true copy of it done. So, instead of sending out for a passport immediately, and since I live in a state that has them, I applied for and received an Enhanced Drivers' License, which is a travel document as well for land border crossings (equivalent in purpose to the passport card).  The nice thing about that was that the local Motor Vehicle Dept did not keep any of my documentation - simply looked at it and scanned the documents.

Obviously, this is not of any help if you actually need a passport, but at least now I have two documents that show my US citizenship in hand...
