Why was this man arrested for giving water to migrants crossing the border?

Cabeza Prieta national wildlife refuge, which includes 56 miles of Sonoran Desert along the US-Mexico border, is a stunningly beautiful wilderness. There are saguaros, endangered Sonoran pronghorn, petroglyphs, and jagged mountain ranges.

It is also where in the past year alone, humanitarian workers have discovered the bodies of 32 people. These remains were found by volunteers from No More Deaths and other humanitarian aid organizations that work to reduce deaths and suffering along the US-Mexico border.

If you go to Cabeza Prieta and walk along its arroyos, chances are you’ll find human remains too. While volunteering for No More Deaths, I’ve come across scattered rib bones, a femur, and a skull resting beneath a mesquite tree, 10 shades whiter than anything else around it.

On 17 January, No More Deaths released a report documenting the systematic destruction by border patrol of water and food supplies left in the desert for migrants. Over a nearly four-year period, 3,856 gallons of water had been destroyed. The report linked to video showing border patrol kicking over gallons and pouring them out onto the ground.

Hours after the report was released, Scott Warren, a volunteer with No More Deaths, was arrested and charged with a felony for harboring migrants after Border Patrol allegedly witnessed him giving food and water to two migrants in the west desert near Cabeza Prieta.

If convicted, he could face five years in prison.

It is a crime to give aid to illegal aliens so I have no sympathy for this guy. The food and water would not be needed if illegals didn't come here illegally.

Leaving water is not a crime. We already have precedent. It is what it is. Border patrol has set up the death trap. It's the way they have chosen to deter people from crossing the border. A trail of dead bodies is an effective deterrent. Humanitarian aid throws a wrench into that. They can't legally stop people from doing that but they can make people think twice.

The guy in the article will not be convicted. That is not the intent. They want to let anyone who thinks about doing this know that they are going to make it hard for them. It takes time, effort and money to fight a legal case even if there is no merit.

There was lots of food and water at the airport and on the plane when my wife migrated here from Russia. Why don't the migrants go that route instead?

Illegals are actually taking that nice and comfy route more often for a while. Visa overstays have been outnumbering illegal border crossings since 2007.

Human smuggling is a despicable activity, used to be in ships across the Atlantic and now across the desert.

I saw that silly article too.  How the heck does anyone know how many are crossing the border illegally to even attempt to compare the stats?  Do you think the illegals from Mexico (the highest number of illegals in the US) are able to get a visa, buy a ticket, then overstay, rather than walk across?

Are you suggesting we are going to build a $25B wall without the knowledge of number of illegals coming thru that route?

Anyway the article can be downloaded from here http://jmhs.cmsny.org/index.php/jmhs/article/download/77/67

Perhaps they should give them those little packets of biscuits that they give you on Airplanes?

Are you suggesting that illegals enter the US, then pop into a local CBP office and fill out a form to let everyone know they made it in?  Yanno, to keep the numbers accurate?

Perhaps they could have an App, so they can log their crossing?

Like Tripadvisor?

I prefer the scientific methodologies such as described here http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/09/20/measuring-illegal-immigration-how-pew-research-center-counts-unauthorized-immigrants-in-the-u-s/

The paper I linked also explains their methodology and cites a few previous research. Feel free to criticize their method.

Or we could take the lazy route and assume those illegals crossing the Rio Grande just like in the good old days.

The old methods are often the best.  Tried, tested, and true.

So you’re trusting a census survey to get the number of illegals coming across annually?  How many of those CPS surveys have you done in your lifetime?

And if you were an illegal... would you fill out and return the survey, or use it as a dustpan as you sweep the floor?
