Adding Beneficiary to Deed of House?

I own my house free and clear. Would it be better to add my fiance to the deed before he moves to the US and we get married, or after?

 

Not sure if/how it would affect assets for the financial support affidavit/ info/etc

 

(also not sure if there is a better sub forum for this so if it needs to be moved, move it lol)

i 485, 130, EAD and AP

04/09/2019    NOA1 received/check cashed i 485 and 130 (direct adjustment)

11/7/2019      Interview- Norfolk

11/10/2019    APPROVED (notification rec'd 11/10, approval dated 11/8)

DONE FOR TWO YEARS!!! ;)

 

Filed everything ourselves with no RFE's or delays.

 

CR1 for Child under 21 (20 at time of filing)- Filed by LPR Spouse for his son

4/4/20     Mailed packet

4/12/20   NOA1 rec'd

10/14/21 (havent heard anything... when do i start to get worried?)

9/15/22 APPROVED! Now to wait for NVC and interview....

The short answer is: neither.


Adding someone to the deed of a property you own means that you will cease to have full ownership and control of the property. The only situation I can think of in which having both names on the deed might be a good idea, is if two spouses are buying a house together and sharing the responsibility to pay for it.

Sharing ownership of a house is a huge leap of faith to take. Ideally, you have to be certain the other person is trustworthy and be prepared for the worst  (i.e. lose half the value of the house when it's sold, sharing its value in a divorce) 

 

Since it's not a dealbreaker / determining factor for his immigration/Adjustment of status, in my opinion, it will be better to add him after you are married. I think it will be best to even wait sometime after you're married.

10/26/2018 I-485 case status updated to "We ordered your new card"

10/31/2018 Case Status updated to "We mailed your new card"

11/01/2018 My card was picked up by the USPS with tracking number assigned

Side note: I turned my maiden name into second middle name. In the combo card, my given name is First Firstmiddleinitial, however on the back of the card, they attempted to list my second middle name.

Yeah, we just werent sure. we are invested in the house together, it just happens to be in my name.

 

trust isnt an issue in our relationship.

 

I understand that many ...relationships that are going through immigration don't have the background and relationship we do ;) lol

Last year, my fiance and I purchased our first home together. 

 

Back in 2012, I was crossing over to visit the fiance. They brought me into second questioning at the border. They told me to help with smooth and less complicated transition or immigration to the US, it would be best that I don't have anything in my name. However this is just from my experience.
