In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Paying a fine is surely better than losing the card and I have never heard of anyone here getting fined.

Remember that one of VJ's terms is that we will never encourage someone to break the law. Technically, not carrying your GC with you is breaking the law, so we generally don't suggest that people do that.

A driver’s license does not prove status in any way. It just means, in most states, that you had a status at some point in time. My wife was just issued one based on her K-1 status, which is only valid for 90 days. We have filed for AOS since then so she does have authorized stay, but she could have chosen not to and been out of status with a valid driver’s license fine.

 

Also, remember that driver licenses are issued by the state. Immigration status is a federal matter.
