Gary Cohn: Trump knows he'll lose 'credibility' with China if he blinks on tariff deadline

Kevin Stankiewicz | @kevin_stank
Published 4 Hours Ago Updated 2 Hours AgoCNBC.com
  • Former White House chief economic advisor Gary Cohn says he thinks President Trump will impose the Dec. 15 tariffs if the U.S. and China haven't agreed to a trade deal.
  • "I think he thinks that that's a forcing function and if he keeps blinking, he losses credibility in the Chinese eyes," Cohn tells CNBC.
  • Cohn also urges his former boss to sign the "phase one" that the U.S. and China announced in October.

Hope the drugs are good. Hard to find good downers and uppers nowadays.

I've seen this proposal before even at the state level, and I have to question if some of these people actually understand how supply and demand works. Canada's population does not really support the ability to supply the US population with prescription drugs. When you have a large number of people vying for a limited amount of product, there is only one outcome. If the goal is lower drug prices, just work on regulating prescription drug prices here.

Regulating prices never works but only makes things worse.

Because we subsidize them here and you wonder why we pay more. Why not allow us to import drugs from Mexico and Asian, etc?

It works because the Canadian government determines the price and has the ability (as a provider) to tell the supplier to take it or leave it. The price they come up with is always high enough for the pharmaceutical company to make a profit. If it wasn't, there is nothing mandating that they sell their drug product in Canada.

I don't have an issue with allowing us to import pharmaceuticals. However I do not think it is the best or most effective answer to the problem. Canada is not a big enough market to supply the US with prescription drugs. That would likely have to be India, which currently presents a different set of challenges for drug regulation.

If only Canadians listened when I said "the second amendment works well for Americans".

Strangely, no one here seems to buy that argument.

I'm sure they listen. I have some great discussions when I am up in Canada or when family comes down here to visit. Long story short, I don't think anyone in ether country is changing their mindset on that issue.  As firearms regulation goes, I so think the majority of Canadians are happier with what they have than what we have. I don't think they would trade places with us on the 2nd amendment or on healthcare.

When we pay the higher prices a profit can be cheaper for other countries so yes we subsidize Canada. Mexico though has great prices or used to as it has been about 6-7 years for me to get them there. The better option would be to force licensing. I can make any drug on the market cheaper than most if allowed to. I used to work part time at a private company producing vitamins and certain other drugs and the mark ups is ridiculous. Allowing monopolies means we always will pay high prices.

I do think the goal is that by getting cheaper drugs from Canada, it will drive prices down here. As I said though, I just don't think the Canadian market is big enough to do that. I also think when demand drives supply down, the Canadian government will intervene.

Or might increase supply. With it destroying the oil/gas market and sending that to the US, Canada is in dire need of something to export in its place.

Just curious, is Canada a net importer or exporter of pharmaceuticals?  I did a brief search, but could not find anything quickly.

Supplies go down the prices rise.
