I've been pretty lucky with my apartment, rarely do I have any neighbors making much noise. I've even had a neighbor who was assembling a bed or something come down and apologize for the noise before he even got started.

Since I do work at home, I do get to hear the construction guys that come around here every few months to remodel an apartment or otherwise. That can sometimes get annoying, so I usually go out during the day or put my headphones on and listen to music loudly.

No suggestions but this is why I would never live in NYC even if someone paid me a million dollars.

At least upstate we got some semblance of quiet. *shudder*

Ask your atty about setting up an escrow acct for the rent money. If the landlord ain't gettin your rent but you're payin it into an escrow acct, betcha he'll act quicker.

BTW that was just a reiteration of ET's idea, but it's a good one!

Good luck

Ack, I hate noise, hate hate hate it!! Especially stupid noise at night. From douche bags with those boom box car stereos. I think to get a quiet apartment in NYC your looking at a million plus for sure. Otherwise its 6" thick concrete floors and metal partition walls which does nada to quiet the place down.

You put 500 people in a building like that you have noise 24/7. Its part of apartment life. If you don't have noise one month, you have it the next. I lived in a condo and it was fine for 2 years then wham, new neighbors with screaming kids. We sold the place and bought a house after six months of the noise.

I think I have been effected permanently and am much less tolerant now of noise in general. It drives me absolutely insane whereas before the condo, I was fine. I cant even stand the sound of cars driving on the street.

Good luck to you.

Jen I dont know how you have put up with your neighbors from hell.

....Im a right "B tch" when it comes to taking ####### from people that live around me. I like to respect my neighbors and I expect the same in return. I dont take ####### from anyone. When I used to live in apartments if there was too much noise I'd bang on the wall so they can shut the F up, or I would get a broom and bang the roof (depends where the noise is coming from. If after that they still presist in being ####### balls with wild noise, I simply call the cops. I call them all the time with out hesitating. =0) It always does the trick. :0) Then they shut up real fast. =0)

Yes, I think a escrow account would be good. I bet if you dont pay your rent, I bet the landlord would be quick at trying to kick you out.. I bet they are paying him off to ignore the problem.

I had someone like that. I guess it was a unemployed Vietnam vet, he was a drunk and always fighting. One night on the 4th of July, he got into it with his wife/girlfriend and I was sound asleep and woke up to the noise.. next thing they were outside, she screaming to let her go I looked out the window and saw her in a choke hold by him, I called 911 and they were about 5 cop cars coming.. I watch the whole thing out my window, they took pictures of her and look for injurys and I saw him being busted and putting in the cop car.. they leaned him up agaist my car and then place the cuffs on him..

I think a lot of tenets were complaining and he kicked out.. about the time I moved out

sigh...........so last night he comes home drunk at 3:45am. trying to get in his apartment but apparently no key or too drunk to open the door himself. he rang his doorbell incessantly and was yelling in the hallway. after 10 minutes or so of this he went upstairs to the roof (we live on the top floor) went down the fire escape our two apartments share and tried to open my window!!! i FREAKED OUT and called 911. did they come? no........but somehow he got in his apartment and gave his wife a piece of his mind for making him sit outside so long. hours...and hours...and HOURS of the two of them screaming at the top of their lungs from across the apartment from each other. i swear it sounds like one sits in the living room while the other is in the bedroom!!!!! then he goes to the front door and opens and slams it shut for no reason! they slam shut the bedroom doors.... its unbelievable! so i called the cops again and they came this time.

basically they told me there is NOTHING i can do. they can't fine them. they can't arrest them. all they can do is come here again and again and "talk" to them. but these people KNOW nothing happens and they do it all again the next night! its probably a big joke to them! all things they are doing are perfectly normal in the city of new york. my rights and ability to sleep mean nothing. who knew?!!?! thanks to the fukcing liberals the rights of these azzholes mean more than anyone else in this building. the cops this time gave me the number to a tenant-landlord court to call. i'll be calling at 9am sharp to see if i have a case. but in the meantime i'm moving. i can't take it anymore. my cute apartment is completely ruined.

and here i am. 6:53am and slept less than four hours tonight. god bless new york city laws! bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :bonk:

yah the cops said they didn't want to scare me but i should be careful........... :(

your current situation is why i prefer to live in the country. i value peace and quiet too.

btw, your landlord is a jerk. maybe he's banging the guys wife and that's why he does not want to kick them out. of course, an anonymous note to the husband alleging that could generate some interesting times and maybe they'll move on their own after that. :innocent:

Aw, I feel sorry for you. You should move. I've had to move a couple of times when I stayed in apartments because of bad neighbors. It makes you mad that you have to do the moving when they are the one's causing the trouble, but for the sake of piece of mind its the best thing you can do.

For four months, we also had next-door neighbours of demonic variety (they moved out at the end of February)

Everytime they left or entered (at least 5x/day), they would SLAM the apartment entrance door at various degrees; everytime, we could feel it in living room, sometimes in bedroom or dining-room--and very often, it would vibrate OUR windows (DR or BR). This couple compounded it by playing their stereo/TV very loud (I could not match the volume without cent-percent risk of hearing loss).

They moved out two months ago, but their replacements are not a complete improvement (still slam the door, but down to 2-3x/day, no stereo/tv).

I'm praying we will have better neighbours when we move to Silver Spring (necessitated by my nearly 2-hour daily commute to G'town) mid-next-week.

get the manager to install an automatic door closer, that will stop the slamming.
