Medical Examination - I-693

Hey guys,

In process of gathering together forms and evidence for AOS, to send off soon as I have my medical completed. Getting my medical done ASAP. I have my vaccination records from back home, so I'll take that with me. I'm super confused by the I-693 vaccination part of the form. What vaccinations do I actually need? I'm 27 and from the UK if that helps. I've also had the seasonal flu jab, which I know is required.

Thanks in advance

its best to hold off on medical until you are way into the process. The medical is only valid for one year from when it received and if for some reason your case takes longer than that then you have to redo it and spend more money.

We were going to do that, but we heard that sometimes they send an RFE for the medical, which causes your EAD/AP to be delayed. So we would rather pay twice than have me lose out on a month or twos income.

I think that is inaccurate. Part of the urban myths that go around this forums masquerading as facts. The USCIS itself suggests you hold off on sending it until later in the process.

Background
Under the immigration laws of the United States, a foreign national who applies for an immigrant visa abroad, or who seeks to adjust status to a permanent resident while in the United States, is required to receive vaccinations to prevent the following diseases:

  • Mumps
  • Measles
  • Rubella
  • Polio
  • Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids
  • Pertussis
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B
  • Hepatitis B
  • Any other vaccine-preventable diseases recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices

It may be worth looking up which doctors do the US immigration medical and looking at their website. I know for the doctors in Canada who do the US immigration medicals, they specify by age what vaccinations need to have been done (I'm from the UK, living in Canada). Hopefully that helps!

Thank you, appreciated! We will call around soon, maybe.

Yeah, I read the part in the I-485 which says:

You are NOT required to submit Form I-693 at the time you file your adjustment application, but may do so if you wish. Because of the time-limited validity of Form I-693, you may choose to submit your Form I-693 after you le your Form I-485. You may also submit Form I-693 in person at an interview in a USCIS eld of ce, if an interview is required. By waiting to submit Form I-693, you may avoid having to repeat the immigration medical examination.

So I was thinking it would be very unfair for them to send a RFE when they tell you that?

That is correct.  Most people try to be proactive and send it with all the other documents but you are not required to do that. And with what appears to be a slowdown in processing speed lately, I wouldn't advise anyone to send it in same package unless they don't mind paying twice.

I haven't seen anyone in my AOS thread (March 2017) who had to redo their medical because it was expired. I personally think that the IOs take the longer processing times into account when deciding whether an applicant needs to submit a new medical. I personally had mine done oversees as part of my K1 visa in August 2016, filed for AOS Feb 2017 and just had my AOS interview in Jan 2018 and wasn't asked for a new medical.

i-693 is valid one year from submitted date and not date done. so medicals submitted in march 2017 wont expire until march 2018. The IO's have no discretion on this.

I know but I'd say 70% in that thread were K1 adjustments so almost all of their medicals were long expired....

That was my thought when I heard about RFE's for AOS, when the instructions say to take them in for the interview. That was annoy me have an EAD/AP delay just because I followed their instructions.

Ok cool, I just wonder if there really is a chance of an RFE happening for the medical if I don't send it in now.

Check out the AOS threads from October 2017 and November 2017 and ask whether people got an RFE for not sending it.

I do remember that people in my thread got RFEs for not having the medical properly completed (the physician forgot to check the box at the very end saying to request a blank waiver for having it fully completed or something... this was for K1 people who submitted the DS-3025 medical paper).

AOSers from K1 are exempted from medical if they AOS within one year of thier overseas medical.

Note: K Visa's: If you were admitted to the United States as a fiance(e) (K-1), child of a fiance(e) (K-2), Spouse of a U.S. citizen (K-3), or child of K-3 (K-4), and received a medical examination prior to admission, then you do not require another medical examination as long as your application for adjustment of status (Form I-485) is filed within one year of your overseas medical examination. You will, however, be required to submit a vaccination supplement with your adjustment of status application. The vaccination supplement must be completed by a designated civil surgeon.'

So there's definitely no chance of an RFE for the medical examination form then when doing AOS from student visa, or any other AOS?

With the USCIS anything is possible but it would be due to a mistake or incompetence rather than policy.  If I was you I would hold off sending it.
