So many threads on here lately start with ‘so my parent just immigrated and has their green card what rights are they entitled to for healthcare, housing etc’ then get annoyed when it is pointed out that they signed the affidavit of support.

So true!

I work in Health care and so many USC don't even realize how expensive it is to grow old in their own country and what Medicare really covers in retirement. They also do not realize  you have to pay into Social Security to even receive some one day.

That is why I am surprised by the whole argument a lot about talk of reforming even social services, welfare, ect... the system has some big issues that need to be shored up but people are very testy about it when it comes to fixing them. The system is gamed a lot, and not just by immigrants but US citizens also.

True, although some countries have social security totalization agreements where you can unify credits from both countries and elect to get a check from one of the two. This should be known among immigrants.

Well certainly many on  seems to be surprisingly so.

There are tons of US citizens gaming the system, TONS. Unfortunately, the Govt has to keep those, no choice.

Canada stopped it due to the drain on their Health care, not sure what the deal is now.

I just do not understand how the vast majority interested in sponsoring older parents could possibly afford it.

And no one said a peep about Canada stopping it.  People didn't get upset saying it was unfair or unkind.  But when it comes to US immigration you will hear and say things I can't repeat on here.  IMO it's not because one act is more immoral or wrong than the other.  It is because immigration reform would make it extremely difficult for people to sham the system.

This is simply a bias thing honestly. It's part of the "resistance" plus throwing in the racial aspect just helps 'intensify' it. Really these days if I want a laugh I go read CNN or some of the main stream media. Try it, it's pretty hysterical.

This website has taught me to sit down and think about all aspects of immigration, taking the emotion out of the equation. The truth is, the U.S has been very forgiving and it needs to change its laws not because they want to hurt people (even if many people are seeing this from a xenophobic perspective) but because they simply can't take in all the people that want to move there.

It's easy to yell ''but it's unfair, people deserve this or that, have a heart!'' when in reality, we all learn that Immigration is a privilege, and the U.S ultimately has the right to do whatever it pleases whether we like it or not.

I'm agreeing with most of what is being stated. There is no reason why everyone should bring their parents and siblings. I'm in an immigration process myself and I fully understand that I'm starting a new life with my husband in the U.S, and I am not bringing my family with me. Doesn't mean I don't love them, they understand that I'm making my own life in a different country, and visiting them as often as I can. If I can't stand the idea of living without all of them I should reconsider moving away.

I am glad you have been able to sit down and take a look at everything I really am. I think me and you got into a argument here on VJ several months back in regards to immigration if I recall. But it's always good to keep a open mind on everything and take in all the facts no matter where they lie.

I wish I could rep you but in all honesty I am all rep'd out today, like seriously I can't give anymore by VJ rules.

This is good to know.

But many countries do not and health care is fortune that will not be covered if someone immigrates after retirement.

Unfortunately, immigration into another country is not a legal "right" for anyone not born in that country.

Weren't they born in the US by immigrants originally?

Gosh my asawa and I hate that in all honesty. Then I am the bad one because I want to go buy some ammo or a new gun instead of helping out just alittle more.
