You didn't do this Khan did. That's why I asked a Mod to merge the threads because it was unnecessary to have multiple threads with the same title/information in them.

:-) I didn’t give link in my reporting of the dupe threads. Was just acknowledging our excellent mods help.

I agree with not bringing in siblings but in reality the process is so long (12 years+, or even 15 years plus in countries like the Philippines) that it doesn't even make a difference. Who the heck wants to wait that long? As for parents, it baffles me what the problem is, the son/daughter has to demonstrate the ability to support them anyways so they don't become public burden. My wife is the only child and we make a good living whereas her mom is uneducated and has to work crappy jobs for little to no money to support herself. We're more than willing and able to take care of her. Ofc we could just keep sending money to China but that sounds counter-intuitive.

I can see parents being allowed but not siblings. I also can see where if you allow the parents then they would not be able to petition the other sons/daughters. My MIL is elderly and half-senile in being truthful with people. I asked my wife if she wanted to petition her mother and my wife said "No". This is her response to my why: "My mother is old already and spends her days walking around town talking to people and picking nuts from the trees. Do you think she will like it here not being able to talk to everybody on a daily basis out here in the country?"

Ya parents I don't really see the problem. There isn't the same "chain" concern for parents (I guess unless they are younger parents and will have more children?) as there would be with siblings. There are a lot of situations where it would just make sense (Like the situation you provided).

They could change the financial requirements to make the burden higher, but to outright eliminate it would just be treating numbers on a piece of paper, without actually impacting our immigration in any meaningful way. Parents of immigrants are not the problem. Not even close.

I think parents even now are definitely a case by case situation. Not every immigrant is petitioning their parents to join them. My wife isn't going to petition her parents. It just doesn't make sense. They have their life in the UK. Now in 30 years if one of them are in their 90's and financially it makes sense for them to come here and we've lived here (and raised our kids here for 30 years)...I would want that option down the road. Realistically though even then we probably wouldn't because they have the NHS for life, whereas insurance here would be so expensive. But if they were from a different country then maybe.

However at a certain point, and depending on the situation, I think it is fair and makes sense to allow a parent to join you. As the other poster said, if you are an only child and your parent requires care/support and you can't provide it from 3,000 miles away. Do you pay the money to put them in a home? If you can support them financial (and show proof of that), why can't you bring them here? What are they going to do?

I'd compromise and agree on your limit so parents can't petition other sons/daughters. I was also thinking about an age requirement. Like parents over the age of 50 or something (so that "parents" aren't coming and then having 6 children after moving here). But then maybe that would be ageism? Meh.

I'm sponsoring my mom and it looks like she will (barring problems with the interview) make the cut (interview is early next week).

However, I'd be totally fine with her getting a long-term visa.

She is not coming here for the welfare (in Italy is much more generous and she is entitled to it as a citizen) and probably not for the lifestyle. She just wants to see her two small grandchildren grow.

Unfortunately, this category is subject to much abuse, I've seen it on my wife's side (came here as a young kid from the former USSR and all her grandparents made it too and they were all on welfare).

Canada stopped it due to the drain on their Health care, not sure what the deal is now.

I just do not understand how the vast majority interested in sponsoring older parents could possibly afford it.

I know what you mean, if you've lived your whole life in your town/village, then that's all you know. It would be overwhelming and to some point dangerous to bring a person like that to enjoy suburban life in the US where even neighbors don't know each other and you need a car to get anywhere..

So many threads on here lately start with ‘so my parent just immigrated and has their green card what rights are they entitled to for healthcare, housing etc’ then get annoyed when it is pointed out that they signed the affidavit of support.

I agree 100% I mean, if they signed the affidavit of support then that shows annual household income, how would they then be able to ask for any type of welfare?

Unfortunately it is true. The system does get abused. People know their responsibilities and still create a burden on the system. It does happen a lot.

Because there are people that come here for college. They pay for tuition, never get in any kind of trouble. In the end, if they try to find a job here, they are not authorized. However, most DV applicants have no skill and come here and start from scratch.
