This bill sounds like something people should really consider but here is the problem:

Most Americans have absolutely no knowledge about immigration and assume change is bad.

This is the issue with a lot of the political topics (people are fed minimal information and feel they are experts and understand the current systems).

Well said. That is an issue; but good news is a lot of networks, not just your main stream medial actually are now putting out a lot of immigration information, statistics, and actual best known numbers to help people better understand what is going on and even trying to break down the process a bit. Obviously it isn't extremely thorough; but it's better than nothing.

Which bill, the new one introduced this month or the raise act? If you listen to podcast that I put a link to in a earlier post then you can hear more about the bill from the author. But who knows as of right now but I can see it at least coming up for a vote from the House of Representatives.

Whichever, they both eliminate bringing parents in so that's what i'm interested in. I tried listening to the podcast but it's too loud with no volume control and i'm at work now.

While I feel bad for a lot of people, especially those are already in the process and may get dropped, I'm not completely opposed to this.

Diversity Lottery - I think it at the very least needs to be changed. I think we still need to promote diversity, but I think it should be weighted with a merit-based system. I don't think people from vastly different countries should have their merits compared (You can't compare access to education in a 1st world country to that in a 3rd world country), but within each country I think it would be reasonable to put weight in the system based on merit. Still make it a lottery, just give advantage to those who have achieved something.

Family immigration - Child and spouses should never change (And under 18 is fine for me). Siblings? Seems a little unnecessary in most situations. I think it would be reasonable to perhaps change the language to "independent siblings", to allow for the rare situations where an adult sibling is a dependent and requires care (You brother has Trisomy 21 and your parents have both passed away). I also think parents should maybe have some exceptions. If you are an only child it may be fine to move to the USA when your parents are in their 50's or 60's, but 20 years down the line when they are in their 80's? What if they have no one to care for them? If you are the only child, are you going to pick up your whole family and move back to provide care? I think that is another "grey area" where I would like to see some accommodation be made.

Border Wall Funding - Waste of time. A physical wall is not going to drastically alter our immigration system. It's the 21st century. We need to be a bit more creative, and far less literal. It will just be a giant money sink

Of course with every accommodation you are at risk for abusing the system.

Well there are the three main points being made that will have to be in any bill thats passed. Ending chain migration(parents, siblings, ect), ending the DV lottery, and border wall funding. They have stood very strongly on those three things and Trump has been pretty darn clear in his message.

True and I have been using my immigration experience with my husband to explain to people how much time, venting, medical clearance, and money it takes to immigrate here with the current system (and ours is through marriage so it is the most streamline way to immigrate).

As people that have been through immigration each person on this forum can be an advocate to educate people on immigration procedures.

Yes, they are talking about ending Chain Immigration which means that bringing parents would not be allowed. But as of right now this is only talk so don't get too worked up about it.

Tax reform was all talk as well, and it happened in a blink of the eye (and they made our holiday season - as accountants - extremely busy)

They will need 60 votes in the Senate this time, true, but Dems know they will be shamed for another shutdown and that Trump would totally let DACA expire if he doesn't get (at least most of) his wishlist done.

I just posted this not too long ago but it looks it got lost when the threads were merged so I'm posting again.. Sorry if it pops up elsewhere..

Let me preface my upcoming statements by saying this: I AM NOT in favor of anyone trying to enter and/or stay illegally into our country at this point but for those already here, especially the DACA folks, who have been law-abiding, paid their taxes and in general have been contributing positively to our society, I believe a path to legal status should be made available to them.

The US has historically allowed Legal Immigrants to petition for their relatives, because they recognized that it is far better for a families' emotional, psychological and mental well being, for them to be re-united than to remain separated. So the question then becomes, what kind and how much of a detrimental effect has Family Based Immigration (FBI) had/is having on our country and, relative to other factors not related to Immigration, what percentage of blame could reasonably be assigned to FBI for the woes that our country is in?

I don't think that most immigrants that come to the US, legally or illegally, come here with the mindset of living off the system. They come here to work, 2 or 3 jobs if they have to, in order to support their family in the US or back in their homeland. Also the vast majority of immigrants, legal or illegal, do not commit crimes and for those who do, I dont believe that its at a rate any higher than that of the general "native" population. In fact, if I had to bet the farm, I would say the rate is probably less..

The US historically admits roughly 1million LEGAL immigrants each year, 45% of which are new arrivals to the country and the rest 55% are those that are already in the country that are upgraded to Permanent Residents. That represents just 0.3% of our US population of 327,000,000!

I'm not saying there isn't fraud, and that their isn't a problem with the system that needs to be fixed, but I don't believe that the level of concern by some good folks over the magnitude of the negative impact of LEGAL Immigration matches the reality of the situation.

I agree with not bringing in siblings but in reality the process is so long (12 years+, or even 15 years plus in countries like the Philippines) that it doesn't even make a difference. Who the heck wants to wait that long? As for parents, it baffles me what the problem is, the son/daughter has to demonstrate the ability to support them anyways so they don't become public burden. My wife is the only child and we make a good living whereas her mom is uneducated and has to work crappy jobs for little to no money to support herself. We're more than willing and able to take care of her. Ofc we could just keep sending money to China but that sounds counter-intuitive.

It will be interesting to see how it goes. They only have until February 8th I believe before another CR needs to be made for spending, so if they don't get this resolved (or some Dems cave into the pressure) it won't get done before March at least.
