Again I dont think that the government is doing this to be cruel but to be smart about the welfare of the country. I would love to say that everyone that comes to the US over the age of 65 comes with hundreds of thousands of dollars or more for just in case expenses and living. They have full insurance coverage and will not cost a cent to the system but the reality is that is not always the case. Asking these individuals to demonstrate proof that they are never going to rely on the US government for assistance isn't a terrible idea. I'm not looking at an emotional response but just at a rationale way of looking at keeping a system alive and adapting to changing times.

Ben Franklin has a nice quote "Every problem is an opportunity in disguise ". If this bill becomes law, we're talking about tens of thousands of elderly moms and dads getting sponsored each year, I'm sure the market would introduce a health insurance model over time for these people. This is America, I'd be shocked if it doesn't.

As I have mentioned this is something I have seen many many times when people have posted about bringing aged parents over, you ask what they will be doing for Health cover and it goes blank.

We all know what the real deal is, some States you can qualify for Medicaid from day one, CA and NY come to mind, otherwise they will leech on charities.

If states allow something, then that's what they want to do. Have the feds tried to make them stop it? Or are we against state's rights now? If they are ''leeching'' on charities, well, that's again what those charities are there for. If the charity wasn't interested in being 'leeched' off of, it wouldn't be set up.

It's not just the aging parents when it comes to healthcare, but any person coming over to the US. How many threads have we seen fiancé's and spouses get glazed over at the mention of healthcare, or just assume something will work?

I under the sentiments of the recent posts... but put my hand up to say that not all older immigrants  and families do this. We immigrated at 65 and 61, well aware of the consequences and prepared to pay the price. I have no issue with requiring older immigrants to demonstrate capacity to pay for their health care.. as the RAISE act will require... but I am acutely aware that our fortunate life situation gives us possibilities that other families will not have.. This is a complex emotion filled and challenging area where there will always be “winners and losers “ and the line will always be drawn in a place which brings significant and often saddening consequences

I'm bothered at the prospect that the Securing America's Future Act (as mentioned in a different thread.. and maybe RAISE does similar) will bar the parent from working. I know a lot of parents probably wouldn't seek work, but there might be some that do. I know that if we ever tried to bring his parents over, they wouldn't be satisfied with sitting around not contributing in some way. We have a pretty terrible health insurance system, and the elderly often get left out of it. I'm not confident in developing anything better here...

Imagine a situation when your children will grow up and let's say move to another country for better professional opportunities. They might do very well there financially and create their own families. If they would be able to financially take care of you when you are older and bring you over there so you could see them regularly and interact with your grand kids, why is it bad? Why do you have to go through long-term visas for aging parents ? With visas you have to go back and forth and it's not always possible for an old person to travel on plain.

It is not bad at all.

But I personally don't want my kids to take care of me. I have college funds for my kids and want them to live their lives. Not worry about me. Me and many Westerners have a pay it forward approach to our kids. I wholly respect cultures that keep tight knit families where they all live under one room. But not everyone is like that. When I have grandchildren, I want them to come visit me and I visit them. Two years ago, my mother at the age of 61, took 6 of her grandkids to Disney World, by herself. That is the type of grandparent I aspire to be.

This is why I say America is like a birds nest society. Many people from other cultures struggle to understand how many Americans live solo when they are older instead of moving into the home of a relative.

I also understand that people form poor or developing countries that don't have a strong social support for the retired and elderly like (401k's and Medicare) rely on family to provide them with support in their elder years.

The problem with that is Republicans have been trying to do this delicately for decades now with no help/support from the Dems at all. So might as well go big or go home in regards to it.

It wont effect those that have already filed the required papers

I am not asking for your numbers but ball park figure, what do you think someone say 65 should budget for health costs if looking to move to the US?

Not one where the vast majority could afford the premiums, quite possible to buy private insurance now, not many want to insure those risks for somewhat obvious reasons.

I can tell you my grandmother experience which isn’t an uncommon experience. Working in American health care and my parents experience.

But Let’s start with the 80,000 dollar medi-flight bill that came in when my father was airlifted to a hospital in Boston because of a stroke. Not to mention his 6 weeks of hospital stays that persisted post stroke. He is a disable veteran and it was all covered but it all started with an 80,000 dollar transport bill that was accidental sent to my parents house.

Or when my grandmother require a skilled nursing facility her last year of life Medicare’s reverses the mortgage on her house to make the payments before they will pick up the payments. She had no house when she passed away because there was nothing left on it.

How many immigrants are expecting these kind of bills to come in.

I don't think most immigrants know that, or realize that. Yes, they hear healthcare in America is expensive, but don't really realize how expensive until they get confronted. Plus, the healthcare system is very complex.

@edsperfect

Wrong. You can be on social sec diability unless you have worked in America and paid into the Social Security. If you did not work or if the employer never contributed towards your social security, then  you are not going to be elgible for welfare or for disability. Not sure who these people are that you know of who are on "soc sec disabilty" but if you know that they have now paid into it, then you should inform the authorities, just to make sure they did not steal anyone else's identity.

This America and there is no such thing as free college!!! If you are talking about public schools, then yes the Education Laws mandate that every child receives education and if it is from the pubic system then it will be free. I dont know where you got the "free college" info from but that is so not true. No university just opens its doors and says "please come in for some really free education!" College and UNiverstities are very expensive and unless you are really really good and can maintain an average of A or A+ you dont get scholorships. ( I know this cuz I have and am working in the education field)

So lets be real here, no one gets social sec disability unless they have paid into it, no one gets welfare unless you qualify for it and welfare is reserved for the citizens of America and people who have refuge status (welfare for people with refuge status is capped between 4 and 6 months and they dont get any assistance after that. As for your last claim about free College please tell us where this college or university is, cuz currently my master's is costing about 30K and i would love to join this "free college" of yours!!!
