Personal preference definitely plays a huge role, plus more specific locations.

Our actual choices would have been London outskirts, Houston, Toronto, Brisbane, Auckland.

From that list, Houston was definitely last.

I could move and work as a doctor in any of those counties, but it would take some time so we needed her job to help support us. She ended up taking VR during a merger, and even still now no one is hiring in exploration really.

My Husband is from the Brisbane area and I would live in Queensland in a heartbeat. It is nice working in Health care, I have looked into transferring my Physical Therapy license there as well.

I would love to travel back and forth and live in both Australia and the US one day but for now my parents are not in great health so my husband was great and moved here. Lucky for us that my in-laws love travelling so they don't think anything about jumping on a plan for a visit and I LOVE going to Australia to visit his family.

How long does it take to get there? I know it's about 24 hours from Europe.

And maybe you guys can move in the future to Australia. I heard great things about the country, never traveled that far though.

She's not a big teaching person. She has a masters, has thought about going back for a PHD. She is keeping busy at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences (volunteer work) and working with the Houston Geological Society (also volunteer work).

Well, at least what she's doing now, albeit unpaid, looks good on a C.V.

Many Cs of C in the area, which increases her odds.

And who you guys can move in the future to Australia. I heard great things about the country, never traveled that far though.

I live on the East Coast but my quickest trip there was 29 hours. My husband and his family do the trip like champs (his brother made the trip for our wedding and only stayed in the US for 6 days because of his pregnant wife). I refuse to go unless we are going for at least 3 weeks. Haha. The first time I went his family was in disbelief that an American could take so much time off of work. Haha

I think in the long term moving to Australia would be on our list of what we would like to do.

She's made some good very high up connections. Her university has a surprisingly large alumni group here in Houston and she has met multiple high up people in super majors and smaller companies. The general consensus from all have been "Well when we have a position that we are hiring for, let me know you're applying".

The climate right now is such that no one is going to create a job...but they'll help her once a job is available. Then there are more complicated aspects that I don't really understand involving what kind of exploration we have in the Gulf and in the USA compared to what she did (North Sea, European basin). Something about conventional vs unconventional and how her experience is in something that we don't do here as much. It goes over my head to be honest.

My wife's old company had an office in Brisbane, and she did her thesis work on coal seam gas reservoirs in some Australian basin. Before the oil price tanked she was going to move there as an Expat. I was lining up research work at one of the Universities and then I would gone through the process of transferring my credentials there. It would have been quite a nice life since her expat role would have paid for our living expenses. Alas it wasn't meant to be.

If she wants to use the money she spends on getting her hair done to send to her mother she is more than welcome.

Once again... we are NOT  ANTI IMMIGRATION!

This is another post where a person has not taken the time to read our replies. If we were anti-immigration, why would be immigrating loved ones and contributing to an immigration board?

Not only that, if you would have continued to read the thread, you would have seen that jaquelly (the person you quoted) later had a different insight on the points we were trying to make.

Imagine a situation when your children will grow up and let's say move to another country for better professional opportunities. They might do very well there financially and create their own families. If they would be able to financially take care of you when you are older and bring you over there so you could see them regularly and interact with your grand kids, why is it bad? Why do you have to go through long-term visas for aging parents ? With visas you have to go back and forth and it's not always possible for an old person to travel on plain.

I think that is the point, that very few people bringing over their parents can actually independently afford to take care of them so they apply for Medicaid with the current system. So in the end an older adult that never lived or paid taxes here will get the same treatment and sometimes better treatment than a USC that paid taxes their entire life and now has Medicare. Immigration needs to look past the emotional aspect and also look at what is good for the welfare of the country as a whole. Most other countries also operate under a similar system as what is being suggest.

Many USC don't even know what is and will be covered in Retirement through government programs and it is spread thinner every year.

Medicare (for the older folks) would be off-limits to those parents for five years. Somehow they are taking care of them without it. If you haven't paid into Medicare or take it at a different time you do have to cough up some cash. These days people either buy insurance for their parents privately, they are rich enough to shuttle back and forth between countries (I have seen this done and wow it is expensive) or they use the ACA. The ACA is no better than buying privately, rare to see any discount only in certain cases.

Medicare is for USC of retirement age and their are others on disability that are also on it as well (for certain programs). I would love to think that all people bringing over their parents are finding amazing health care coverage but don't believe that is the case for a lot of family and if they are supplying those kind of coverages then it will likely minimize the effects of this bill for them because it sounds like they will still be able to bring them over substantial amounts of time.

It's not bad at all and raise act leaves that option open. What it takes away is path to citizenship, and path to federal, state, and local public benefits, and employment rights.

LPRs can be on Medicare, but only after they have been here for five years. If they have not worked however, they will have to pay into certain parts.

And if a family can't cover the 20,000 dollars a year. They will still get care and the government eats up the loss.

As I have mentioned this is something I have seen many many times when people have posted about bringing aged parents over, you ask what they will be doing for Health cover and it goes blank.

We all know what the real deal is, some States you can qualify for Medicaid from day one, CA and NY come to mind, otherwise they will leech on charities.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Again I dont think that the government is doing this to be cruel but to be smart about the welfare of the country. I would love to say that everyone that comes to the US over the age of 65 comes with hundreds of thousands of dollars or more for just in case expenses and living. They have full insurance coverage and will not cost a cent to the system but the reality is that is not always the case. Asking these individuals to demonstrate proof that they are never going to rely on the US government for assistance isn't a terrible idea. I'm not looking at an emotional response but just at a rationale way of looking at keeping a system alive and adapting to changing times.
