I have  had people ask me that question too...I think it's very insulting.

Lol, someone even asked me once: are you a refugee??

My wife were looking at three countries as options for living (well four). UK, Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

The USA was last on the list. She only moved here because in the interim the oil price tanked, her job prospects declined and we're here because I have a steady job. We'll be gone if she ever gets an job offer elsewhere.

I'm not saying the USA is a bad place. There are a lot of places that are worse. But at least for us there were several places that were better. Canada would have also probably been on the list as well, but her company didn't have offices there.

I think I'd pick US as #1 out of those 4, with Canada as #2 out of the 5.  Both would most likely offer a cheaper cost of living overall.  But I'd vacation in AUS or NZ any day.  Great countries.

Personal preference definitely plays a huge role, plus more specific locations.

Our actual choices would have been London outskirts, Houston, Toronto, Brisbane, Auckland.

From that list, Houston was definitely last.

I could move and work as a doctor in any of those counties, but it would take some time so we needed her job to help support us. She ended up taking VR during a merger, and even still now no one is hiring in exploration really.

All countries are great.

We would be in the UK if we could. Alas that was not to be, and by far there were much better opportunities for him in the USA.

That is true but what's sad is a majority of Americans don't travel outside the country at all. If they do then they go some BS touristy place. I like touristy places as well every now and then, but I am more than happy going off the beaten path. If you do that usually have better memories and pictures anyway.

how we met

Old-yet-repeatable:

I came home one eve, and this dialogue ensued:

Mrs. T-B.:  I bought you cheap.

T-B.:  What did you say?

Mrs. T-B.:  I bought you cheap.

T-B.:  What do you mean?  I'm not that cheap.  And you'd better not let Immigration hear you say that!

Mrs. T-B. [frustrated]:  Cheap, cheap!  I bought you cheap!

Upon investigation, Mrs. T-B. had gone to the store and bought me a bag of potato cheaps, si man. :bonk:

Voluntary Redundancy.

When her company merged with another they said they would be letting people go, but allowed people to voluntarily leave (with a severance package) and avoid the merging process.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

I would have a big pay cut and would need to work as a trainee again for a little awhile.

We still would have done it if she continued in her job, but there was too much job insecurity in her field. Still is.

Ya sorry I wasn't even used to the term but we said it so many times to so many coworkers of hers that it became normal for me.

Kind of like how I've started calling zucchini courgette without even thinking. And Swedes as well.
