I am in my 30s now but when i was in middle school and high school many trade schools were actually being closed due to budget cuts.

Now I am saying this, I KNOW IT IS NOT TRUE, but in my generation going to trade school was looked down upon and college was encouraged. Now people are realizing my generation has school loan debt with mediocre jobs and realize trade schools are often a great alternative to college education. In fact were I grew up it is now competitive to get into trade programs.

True, you are basically considered less intelligent when you don't go for BS or a Master's.

I don't think much has changed, I was talking with a friend who finished his master's in finance, he didn't want to work at his dad's bodyshop, because that's "poor man's work".

I hear the term STEM degrees and I am actually not familiar with them. I was lucky and ended up in a good career in healthcare but healthcare requires excessive education to work in these days. I had to get my Doctorate to become a Physical Therapist, it is required for US license and examination.

STEM- Science Technology Engineering Mathematics.

We have a friend of ours who was a traveling Physical Therapist that traveled all over the country and his wife is a RN at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. He ended up finding a nice job in Podunk Colorado and they moved they family there, now she works a PT job in CO and a PT job in LA as well. Basically filling in for people that go on vacations and yes they fly her from Denver to LAX a couple times a month.

Thankfully they were able to calm my wife down before we moved from CA to NC last month basically telling her that rural life is great because your out of the hustle and bustle, not to mention a lot less traffic.

I grew up with my father who was a carpenter, he actually built our first house.

I remember being very disappointed as an adult when I realized his skills were really hard to come by and no one in my generation knew how to do anything with their hands.

Lucky for me I met my husband (who is a carpenter turned project/operations management) When we were in AOS everyone in town was asking him for favors because he was the only person who could fix or install anything. My generation is completely lacking those skill sets.

I agree, many folks look at trade schools like someone who decides to go into the military.  Kind of like second class folks compared to those that go to a university.

Yet that poor man is charging him $60-90 an hour to fix his car for him. My nephew works in a autobody rebuild place and makes good money, he actually bought a starter house last year at 26 years old.

We should probably change that to STEMM with the second M being Medical, although Medical could probably be grouped with Science.

Exactly and that's how I felt at times talking to people from HS. I felt like they were looking down on me because I spent almost 8 years in the Marines, and only got my B.S. at the ripe old age of 32, which I am working on my MBA now. I really felt like that when I was talking to a former friend of mine who is a International journalist now and talks about how she grew up in a Podunk town(What? 200k is not Podunk), and how she was glad to see how I moved away and out of the town. I was sitting here thinking "you may be a journalist and working on a documentary right now, but I have a lot more job fulfillment and my job actually can help people and potentially save lives", and it pissed me off actually.

It is a scam just like the TrumpU thing.  There are public and private universities that recruit folks to come to college and when they end up in worthless degree programs, they could not care less since the money is rolling in.

OK, let's not go overboard. Regular Universities are not paying off people to drop lawsuits over their degree's.

It's really up to each individual to make sure their degree is going to take them where they want to go. If you wan't to make sure you always have a job, study for a degree that does that. If you wan't to study classical literature, that's fine too, just understand where you can go with that degree.

I think alot if people believed that those jobs soon will be part of history. I remember my dad trying to talk my brother into becoming a mechanic, but he didn't had the skills. He got his master's in economics and was unemployed for a year because there was a financial crisis. He has a great job now,. But his best friend who became a mechanic has his own business.

My husband's father was a constructor with a very high paying job, but like most people of his age my husband was encouraged not to do the same. Something he dreads till this day.

I think it is almost a scam sorry. I went to a For Profit school that was private and is looked down upon by a lot of people because they are for profit. I have had to tell people where I used to work at Caltech that yes this school(Caltech) may be Nonprofit school but they do actually make a profit but they just spend the money else where such as salaries/bonuses, investments.

You may not believe me but I used to work in a building right behind the Investment Building at Caltech, where the investors worked to make money for the university. They ALL drove over $100k cars with specific parking spots that cost $1k a year to have. There was one guy who loved to be picked up/dropped off by a personal driver as well at least 2-3 times a week. Oh it's a scam.

Every school now is pushing student loans and specific programs just to funnel more money into the school to keep it afloat.

Sure, we are programmed to think of Universities as bastions of higher learning, but in reality, they are really just places that are trying to get money.  Private universities get a lot more flack, but they are pretty much all the same.  I do wonder, not being an attorney, are public universities immune from lawsuits like the ones filed against private universities (i.e. not getting anything for their money)?

I agree, it is up to the individual to determine what is best for them, but there are plenty of University counselors that really represent the U and not the student, and do everything they can to keep the money coming in.

That's a different issue. The degree you earn is not a scam unless you don't actually get what you paid for. If you can't do anything with that degree, I'm not sure you can blame that on the university or college.

How many folks going to Public Universities do not get what they pay for?

That is very true indeed. But my thing is how a lot of colleges both private and public are pushing people to sign up for XXXX amount of loans just to fill their coffers. All the while the student is left with a huge debt that he/she may not be able to pay off for a long time if at all.
