Those are un-negotiated rates. US health insurances negotiate much much lower.

Anyways, I can tell you that giving birth (natural delivery and no complications whatsoever) in a Manhattan hospital costed my insurance $30k each time.

Yes, because I didn't contact the insurance they couldn't negotiate. That's why I'm thankful they paid anyway.

I'm sure they threw a party when I cancelled my insurance last year.

30K..... omg..now I understand when they say having children is expensive. I'm glad I got my kids in Europe and didn't need to pay extra for all the medical bills and being in hospital for couple days. Otherwise I would have been financialy enslaved for the rest of my life and my children's had to work for their own birth.

This people are immigrants. I know we had this discussion before but I'm not making this up.

I am not going to comment on Holland as I seen to remember they do a few weird things, generally it would not be the case. Holland may be the exception that proves the rule.

But that's the uninsured rate. Most US health insurance has a ~$150 co-pay for ER visits, and it is waived if you're admitted to the hospital. Your insurance probably paid something like that to close the bill.

No, actually they paid the whole amount. How do I know? They paid it directly to me and I had to pay it to the hospital.

Remember, this was a foreign insurance not American.

What weird things?

Maybe, that's why I mentioned how it works there in response to Italian_in_NY.

It would be interesting if it turns out that this mom can keep her insurance.

That's what they billed (at negotiated rates) my insurance. I paid probably $200-$300 in copays/coinsurance total.

I think there are special programs for pre-natal and post-natal care (CHIP one of those for children).

Congress will never vote for this. It will mean discrimination based on age.

I'm well aware of how Medicaid works....................

If you are aware how it works, why do you ask questions?

It would be discrimination based on immigration status, if anything.

I was asking it as a potential compromise. I'm not stating it is what we do now.

If people are concerned about chain immigrating parents becoming a burden on our "welfare system", what if they didn't qualify for some of the social/welfare programs that legal residents qualify for? That way they can still come, but their child is fully responsible for them.

Those are great! Hopefully they keep them cause I don't see how people would afford healthcare for their kids.

In reality they (seniors) do qualify if their income is below certain limits. Even illegals (undocumented aliens) are qualified for Medi-Cal if their income is below certain income limits (I'm talking about California welfare system).

Are you sure that is what your insurance paid, or was it what the hospital charged?

Average cost of a routine vaginal delivery in NYC is about 12 grand last time I checked. I used to be a Pediatrician in Manhattan.

Edit - just saw a later post saying that is what they billed. It's unlikely your insurance provider actually paid that. What they charge insurance is usually much higher than what is paid. It's silly but they all play the game.

That's what cigna paid.

I remember the breakdown: hospital for two-night stay, obgyn, pediatrician, anesthesiologist, and others... The obgyn alone was $7k. The anesthesiologist was almost $3k. The hospital bill was the higher.

I think you keep confusing reality with talking about future changes.

Again I realize right now anyone qualifies if they meet the requirements. If people or so concerned about our welfare state I'm talking about changing that. Particularly for immigrants.

Would certainly make immigration less appealing for some.

One weird thing would be to insure Medical risks in the Dutch market where the premiums I assume are much cheaper when you live in the US.

The general rule of thumb back in the day was that you at least doubled premiums where the US was involved.

It would not be Obamacare compliant btw.
