By the way, the Senate (Cotton/Purdue) bill would be effective on Oct 1, 2018 at the very earliest.

It would be interesting to see how it would play out for pending petitions. There are some sibling petitions that are being processed from mid 90s.

Currently yes, but raise act ending this. the US citizen son/daughter has to show proof that they have arranged health insurance, at no cost to the parent, during parent's stay.

Lol, I can already see the nightmare with the documentation required.

And what kind of plan suffices?

And how do you sign up for health insurance for 5 years?

Personally, I would not have my mom (who's 61, so still relatively young) staying here one minute without being covered (I always bought her travel insurance when she visited, even for a few days) , but that's just me.

I dunno man, that's what they put in the bill. End of page 14. https://www.cotton.senate.gov/files/documents/170802_New_RAISE_Act_Bill_Text.pdf

Pg 15... They give a 1-yr grace period for visa (not petition) pending. I think that's fair.

EDIT: Nevermind, that's for people already in the US (so under AOS).

I spoke yesterday to a friend of mine at the Italian equivalent of the State Dept (she used to work at the Italian Consulate in NYC) and she told me it is totally possible to be covered from Italy at a fraction of the cost (you just have to pay the bills first to get reimbursed). I'll investigate.

I had the same when I still had my insurance. I had to pay upfront and got reimbursed later. Its defenitly worth looking into it.

Although, god save, pay upfront could make you go bankrupt in certain cases.

Financially is a burden, but economically, it makes sense.

You can take a loan from your IRA or 401k, or draw from the HELOC... if that saves me 4 or 5 grands a year

I know, I never go to the ER and I haven't had fever since I was a kid. A year ago I had very high fever and I was freaking out, GC said I had to go to the ER. Without having a clue I did so, I got some meds to bring the fever down and was sent home after 2/3 hours.

Couple weeks later I received a total of  $9,000 dollar bills. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Luckly my insurance was willing to pay although I didn't contact them first.

That was a lesson I won't ever forget.

I'm well aware of how Medicaid works.

I was asking about a future change. If the concern is the elderly parents becoming a burden, then increase the financial requirement and exclude immigrant parents from our "socialized" healthcare system for the elderly.

Allow parents to come as long as they are able to provide their own care financially (or make the petitioner truly responsible).

Congress will never vote for this. It will mean discrimination based on age.

I'm well aware of how Medicaid works....................

If you are aware how it works, why do you ask questions?

so ignore politifact and go with common sense. there's a reason trump/white house can't offer any evidence to back the claim up. but since you're out of the gate ignoring facts (that are easily checked, this is an immigration forum after all) to repeat a lie told by trump to rile up his xenophobic base, and screaming 'leftist' - we're probably done here.

Those are un-negotiated rates. US health insurances negotiate much much lower.

Anyways, I can tell you that giving birth (natural delivery and no complications whatsoever) in a Manhattan hospital costed my insurance $30k each time. Obviously not a problem for elderly parents, but just to give an idea of the magnitude.

It's not discrimination.

If you read the draft, those permits would be non-immigrant visas (no employment authorized).

But that's the uninsured rate. Most US health insurance has a ~$150 co-pay for ER visits, and it is waived if you're admitted to the hospital. Your insurance probably paid something like that to close the bill.
