This isn’t Asia so I find it baffling following that mindset. I’ll use my MIL as an example - she would be dead miserable here and my wife knows it.

I haven't been to Vietnam but I would assume they also have no retirement guaranteed by the govt just like in China. How will your MIL support herself in old age?

The raise act would 100% allow you to do that. You will be allowed to bring your parents here with a residential permit. You would be responsible for covering their health insurance.

If that's the case then it's fine. I just haven't seen that in the article.

I did not know that, though I wouldn’t call it travel insurance then. That’s interesting, I had seen extended insurance for those on k1 to the end of their 90 day

When I moved to America there was some confusion whether I could keep my health insurance from the Netherlands or not. I actually bought two months from one of those international insurances, and then got notified that I was required to keep my insurance ( sigh) so I went back to my national health insurance.

The insurance I switched to for two months told me that the premium was higher because it's America, they charge much less when it's another country.

Also I'm on a Dutch immigration Facebook group of people moving to different countries and I see the question about the insurance being asked alot, and I see names of health insurance providers who offer international insurances for Dutch immigrants.

So I assume that there are other European countries who have the same system.

Look I am sympathetic I think Its very nice to take care of your old family members and its honorable. But eventually the lines will blur. Of course if she makes it here she will one day be on Medicare. Like if she becomes a citizen. I dont blame anyone that does it, its legal and the law of the land currently. But I dont think good because parents mostly are net loss and cost taxpayers like me money that could go elsewhere. Like paying our trillions off in debt or to infrastructure . And yes you and your wife a probably good hard working taxpayers, but you would have to do that regardless if they come here or not. So it will be a net loss always.

I have been to China actually, and they got quite a lengthy visa process themselves. Its virtually impossible to immigrate to China, they dont have any of the categories that they have here and its nearly impossible if you are not super specialized to become a long term immigrant let alone receive citizenship .

There are two sides to a coin. It will also be a net loss for the economy if we have to send money oversees to support her instead of spending it here, for example on a new car, thus stimulating it. I'm not sure what's worse.

Yes, China is a very closed off country. I was surprised I had to get a visa to go there. It's going to change though, I'm sure.

You can buy Travel Insurance, but that does not work for those immigrating.

I spoke yesterday to a friend of mine at the Italian equivalent of the State Dept (she used to work at the Italian Consulate in NYC) and she told me it is totally possible to be covered from Italy at a fraction of the cost (you just have to pay the bills first to get reimbursed). I'll investigate.

If a US citizen is sponsoring the parent, shouldn't he/she responsible for providing healthcare?

You would think that would be how it works but it is disappointing to hear that they would be placed on Medicaid, considering they would be provided more benefits then some USC that have worked their entire life and would be qualified for less in their retirement age.

I think a lot of people underestimate the cost of health care in the US without insurance coverage until its too late and already in the Hospital. I see it happen a lot in my job. I have a feeling a lot of people are naive to the costs of retirement and aging with appropriate health coverage in the US.

For Example: If you have just Medicare in retirement and end up in a Nursing Home. Medicare has the right to reverse the mortgage on your home to make payments for your nursing home stay. This wouldn't happen on Medicaid.

The terrorist was the point of contact for 23 people, that's different than sponsoring.

and for all we know, they're totally making that up too..

Trump said that "22 to 24 people" came into the United States due to family connection with the suspect in the October 2017 New York City terror attack.

The Trump administration did not provide any information to support this repeated claim about Saipov.

Green card holders, such as Saipov, can only petition for a spouse and unmarried children to come to the United States. Media reports indicate that Saipov married a woman who already lived in the United States and that their three children were born in the United States.

Saipov could not have petitioned parents or siblings in his current immigration status.

Without evidence to support it, we rate Trump's claim False.

Yes. just like people assume a US citizen can sponsor GC for cousins, aunts, uncles, and grand-parents. I should say those 3rd degree cousins aka Cousin Eddie are the worst.

Currently yes, but raise act ending this. the US citizen son/daughter has to show proof that they have arranged health insurance, at no cost to the parent, during parent's stay.
