I have said repeatedly on here when people tell me that our nation is a land of immigrants. It is a land of immigrants yes but a land of immigrants that worked hard to push themselves up out of where they came from to come here, and push themselves and their families upward.

So that's why it makes me mad when I see posts on here about how they can best bring family members here to live off the system or they just brought them here and what are their rights for this or that. No matter what your color, race, or nationality this is fundamental to our country that if you willing to work hard put in the time/effort then you will succeed. But lately it feels like people want to let this dream die at the feet of political correctness and that people shouldn't have to work hard to achieve what they want.

Do you really believe that most immigrants come here to live off the system?

Also when you say "it feels like", can you accept that that position may be more emotional, than rational? Who exactly is advocating "that people shouldn't have to work hard to achieve what they want"?

For instance,  people who have tourist visas can get married and adjust status in the US. That means there is no wait for them to be together. Meanwhile a person who doesn't have a tourist visa must wait over a year before their visa is approved to come to the US. Many members on VJ feel that is greatly unfair to the millions who can't get tourist visas. Should there be some type of reform to close this loophole or at the very least offer some type of opportunity for spouses a chance to visit their loved one in the US? Yes, I think so. Does that make me anti-visitor visa, of course not.

I agree with you and I definitely support a reasonable bipartisan reform that will take care of this loopholes and many others in the immigration processes and laws.

BTW I haven't said you are anti-immigration nor selfish :)

...do good and good will be done onto you...

You assume all legal immigrants come here for free health care insurance, medicare and foodstamps? This is what is being discussed here, not illegal immigration

I agree 100%, illegal immigration should be priority #1, not cutting off others who are immigrating legally

Again, we're talking about cutting off legal immigration. I came here as an immigrant too, so did my wife and we did it legally with a ton of paperwork and money instead of hopping over the fence. But this proposal cuts off legal immigration while negotiating with the left to let the illegals stay.

That was just one example . The mantra back then was you come to american and sink or swim . There was no help what so ever. It was build up by immigrants . Now those new immigrants legal or illegal compete directly with immigrants already here or african american or other disadvantaged minorities. The USA is not like back then where it was kind of like a gold rush mentality. Its established now and growth in the USA is going good but stagnant in terms of wages etc ... We need to preserve whats there and first take care of the people here .

Yes more then one million green cards a year is to much . Legal and illegal immigration needs to be cut down and just match the rest of the first world countries like Canada and Australia for example that would take some pressure of the system .

Since I have started dealing with immigration because of my wife my eyes are open more to it than what they were in the past.

It was both rational and emotional in all honesty. Rational because I hate how this country is turn away from being a country that you can do anything as you long "pull up the bootstraps and get to work". But emotional because I am father of 4 wonderful children and I fear we are going down the wrong path of mediocrity. I was trying to leave the who out of it but I will come flat out and say that the Dems and the various far Left are the ones behind this idea.

I agree that there are serious problems with immigration but I don't agree with some of the categories they're trying to eliminate. Both you and I came here legally. It's not fair now to say: "Oh hey, I'm here already, time to close the gates for others who want to come here just like I did because I'd have to compete with them in the job market."

But that’s the thing most commenting here didn’t use the categories that they are trying to eliminate but are spouses of either citizens or residents or came here on a work visa.

Well I dont think its quite fair you say that because myself and whats proposed in the Raise Act for example carve out direct family members. That is because the United Nations agreed on by most countries in the world gurantee family reunification . But that is not extended family members its just for Children and Spouses .

So the way you and me came her will not be impacted so I dont understand how I want to close the door behind me in any way .

It is true that immigrants from third world countries mostly try to get there whole village over once they are here. Take fo example the teorrist that smashed into pedestrians in Manhattan . He got here through the lottery and sponsored more then 20 PEOPLE directly or indirectly as the result of direct immigration . He was really no success story and had absolutey no education whatsoever what do you think his family members are like ?

Also, there would be long-term visas available for parents, basically some sort of green cards without work permits and potential access to welfare (and obviously no path to citizenship).

What's the problem with that? I'd be fine with it (I am sponsoring my mom as matter of facts).

I was at a meeting today and there was a representative of a university. The message that strikes me was this: if you believe you are sort of homeless, let us know. We can pay your tuiton, your books, help you with housing, and anything else that you need.

I think situations like this will end up damaging America more than anything. Why? Because you're sending out the wrong message and making it easy for people to abuse the system. This was for people who are USC or GC holders.

Long term visa with no ability to adjust or sponsor or take any funds even state or local ones. Plus a need to buy into extended travel insurance before each trip over like the esta requires a return flight.

This would be of great help to those who don’t want to sponsor parents but whose parents currently can’t get visa due to presumed immigrant intent.

It also damages legit people who might have fallen in disgrace and need temporary help.

By the way, I'm looking into insurance options for my mom (her interview is Tuesday so she might make the cut lol) and I'd be much better off getting her travel insurance in Italy. It'd reimburse pretty much everything up to whatever cap I choose.

Yes, you have to advance cash, but you get it all back. Something to think about it. The cost would be much much lower.
