Maths is short for Mathematics.

math·e·mat·ics
maTH(ə)ˈmadiks/
noun

  1. the abstract science of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics may be studied in its own right ( pure mathematics ), or as it is applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering ( applied mathematics ).

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Of course I know that. Math is also an abbreviation for mathematics.

It's an abbreviation so the typical rules don't apply I admit, but an "s" on the end does make it sound plural. The term mathematics is singular, so I prefer the "Math" abbreviation because it sounds singular, though I realize even the longer word ends in an '"s" as well.

It just sounds strange, that's all. I realize that they are both right (just like toward and towards). Not sure why I prefer towards, but prefer math in this case though.

Fun article on the subject - One thing I thought was interesting was how older fields of study didn't get an 's' attached to them, because they were already established (Arithmetic...imagine Arithmetics ug), but many others obtained a dead "s" - physics etc... in the 17th century.

From what we know the FBI used the "political hit piece" written by a foreign INDIVIDUAL as PART of an application to renew a warrant on an INDIVIDUAL who they had already previously been monitoring due to suspicious ties.

The "UK Powers" were not involved in any way. People need to stop conflating Steele with the UK Government. Just like Carter Page shouldn't be conflated to mean "the entire Trump campaign".

You are the perfect example of why people had valid concerns about the memo. It leads people to jump to larger conclusions than we are actually able to make with the information provided. It's like that was Nunes's whole point with the endeavor though.

I had heard that they also included media reports of the memos written by the foreign agents that the said foreign agent gave.  Still wonderful  logic.  Another interesting outcomes is that it proves Trump was right when he said the Obama administration was spying on his team.  I seem to remember he being called a kook for even suspecting this.

Most people prefer math since they cannot spell mathematics.  We should ask NB which he prefers.

You "heard" from where exactly? With any of these situations where we aren't given all the information (despite calls for transparency it is obvious the "memo" is not all of the information), we have to be careful with how we conflate what we are told and how we make assumptions.

Wasn't Trump claiming Obama tapped his phones, specifically? I don't think that surveillance of Carter Page would have gone to the lengths of taping Trump's phone. Trump claims to have never even met the guy, so his phone wouldn't have been a great source of information. Also, by claiming it was the "Obama administration", in my mind that is implying that Obama was somehow aware. We have no evidence of that. The memo is talking about an independent application for a FISA warrant by the FBI. Obama is not involved in their warrant applications, I'd guess.

Even more examples of blowing things out of proportion.

Yep, the old “tapping phones” response.  Sure he said that, but the meaning is deeper in my opinion, and it does make me nervous when an administration conducts potentially illegal surveillance on American based on very dubious information.  In my opinion, open the doors.  The fact that government agencies can hide anything by labeling it classified is getting a little old.

No it's not. People in the USA (to my knowledge) don't refer to the subject as Mathematic. We still call it Mathematics, but we abbreviate it Math. At best mathematic is an adjective though not a very common one, at least personally.

The USA adopted "Mathematics" from the UK, but we took a different abbreviation. It talks about it in the article.

How do you know the TOTALITY of information in the FISA application was dubious?

The memo is only talking about one part of the application. It doesn't go into detail about what else was in the application. Once again - Jumping to conclusions. The Steele dossier information may have been included to corroborated other sources of information that the memo doesn't go into detail about.

It also claims the FBI and DOJ used media reporting to lend credibility to the dossier. Fusion GPS, it says, briefed major American news outlets to include New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, New Yorker, Yahoo and Mother Jones on its contents.

Sure, it might be jumping to conclusion, but it seems to be directionally correct.

Really? What part? West Coast it is definitely math (where I went to school). Texas as far as I can tell it is math. In NYC I never really talked to anyone about it so I'm not sure.

New England maybe? I could see Ivy League places trying to act "sophisticated" and using the British style.

Annoying I can't copy and paste directly from the memo since it's in a PDF off the fox website, but I'll type quickly (apologies for any typos).

Point 2 - Subpoint A -

"Steele was suspended and then terminated as an FBI source for waht the FBI defines as the most serious of violations - an unauthorized disclosure to the media of his relationship with the fBI in an October 30, 2016 Mother Jones article by David Corn. Steele should have been terminated for his previous undisclosed contacts with Yahoo and other outlets in September - before the Page application was submitted to the FISC in October - but Steele improperly concealed from and lied to the FBI about those contacts."

The application in October did reference a Yahoo News article, however as the memo even states at the time of the application they did not know he made those contacts with Yahoo at the time. They found out later, and he was terminated as a source.

Never been to Colorado so I don't know how they say it there. In California and Oregon it's definitely "Math".

A quick google and I found a website for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs that uses "math" as the abbreviation all over their website. Even in the URL. - https://www.uccs.edu/~math/

So the FBI thought Steele was unreliable, thought he was highly biased, but then still included his suspect work in a FISA application along with media reports that were also highly suspect?  If alll the other information presented to the FISA court was so compelling, why did they even include the Steele documents?
