Social Security guy rejected my green card extension letter

Hi everyone so what happen was, I am in Las Vegas and I went to the Social Security administration today to change the last name on my social security card (because it's different from my green card and I just want them all looking the same last name), I wanted to add my husband last name instead. So, I was finally called after waiting there for hours and the man attending me asked for my ID, so I gave my permanent resident card with the extension letter I got from USCIS (that extends my green card for 1 year) so everything was fine to me until he said he couldn't accept my extension letter, because the Social Security Administration do not accept at all. So I went to the USCIS office in Las Vegas to ask about that, they said that the man was acting like a idiot and my card with the extension letter was perfectly fine and valid. I am going again tomorrow and I will try one more time, if I am rejected again because of that, I will ask to talk to a supervisor.

What do you guys think about that? Did something like that happened to any of you? How should I proceed?

I'm mostly just wondering why you didn't change the name on the SSC earlier? Why wait until the greencard expired?

Hi Natalia Morris, any update on your issue regarding? I am asking because i am having the same issue like yours. the social security office didnt accept my extension letter too. My case is this, I already using my husband name but when we went to dmv they rejected me, they said they cannot process my name because my greencard has my middle initial name.. :( that is why we went to social security. so she said we need to go to immigration to get a stamp so they can proceed. So rejected in dmv, now social security, and we’re in hesitant if we need to go to immigration because as far i know the extension letter is valid as per USCIS. sighhh.. we’re do i go from here..  How frustrating isn’t.

Assuming they are using the same system as DMV (I think it's called SAFE) there is a problem when you show up with a non-standard form. They all know the code to enter for a green-card or for an I-94 with a visa, But few of them know all the codes the system accepts. If they enter the code based on your current green card there is an error (your card has expired) so they need to enter the correct code based on the correct document. They have a book with all the codes for all accepted documents, but you might have to persuade them to get out of the chair and go get the book.
