Just a quick update on his naturalization, he might have never applied. He may not applied in 90s due to the conviction being on records, then his hospital website says his medical degree is from Dominicana, that's 4 years away from US, based on his age I'm assuming he came back sometime early 00s. Then DUI in 08, domestic violence lawsuit in 2013 in which he was found not guilty. He might never had chance to apply.

One question: why didn't this guy apply for US citizenship before? His sister did. He seems educated enough to know the process.

Maybe he was afraid of getting denied for something that was not on the news?

Seems like there's more to the story.

I personally know few people who got their citizenship even with arrest for insignificant violations (mostly weed in the car). One of my closest friend got a DUI the day before his green card interview and still got it (after a while) and he is now a US citizen.

So it has to be more than some rowdy teenager issue.

I know a fair few people who just haven't bothered, with ever applying for citizenship, and have lived in the United States for years.

Me too (30+ years), but it could be a possibility since it appears his all family naturalized.

Usually the 10 yr mark is the norm for most Europeans. Instead of paying for I-90, pay for N400 and be done with USCIS.

My ex business partner (in the US for almost 40 years) became a citizen because I helped him with the N-400. He did not want to become one for some old-fashioned reasons.

He had a green card from the 80s so old (I've never seen one like that) that it never expired (they had no expiration date before, I guess).

He told me that the IO at the interview was shocked, saying that in 20 years at USCIS/INS he never saw that kind of GC...

Too bad in 90s N400 fee was under $100. Now $725.

Aren't long stays outside of the US for school not considered? Just a question. I'm probably reasoning in tax terms (you would not lose residency if you go away for school).

He probably took re-entry permit for the extended leave.
