Passports for AOS Interview... Do we need them?

HI!

My husband and stepsons just received their interview letters yesterday! June 27, 10:00am! I hope that is the end of it!

One question... My husband and his sons don't have passports. They are Canadian citizens and have never needed them to enter the US. The NOA letter for the interview says to bring passports. Will they be denied without a passport? Have any Canadians been to the interview and not had passports?

Maybe they should apply TODAY to get them!

Any advice would help!

Thanks,

J

What did they use to provide his TN visa? I would have thought that a passport would have been required for that.

As for your questions, I haven't got a clue. :) For most of the visas people here obtain, the passport is where the visa is physically placed; usually the problem is a passport that's expiring.

I suspect that you would want to set up an Infopass appointment and ask that question directly to the people that would know. You could also have a wander to the Canada forum here on this board to find a thread with links to renewing a Canadian passport from the US...that would be a good resource in Canada to ask. They might be able to expedite passports for all of your Canadian family prior to interview.

Best of luck!

I would not worry about it if I were you. If they did not require a passport to enter the US, then they won't require one at the AOS interview. Although it's a good to check with USCIS to make sure (I did already check this out though, because my own son did not have a passport).

There is plenty of time though for them to get passports from passport Canada before the end of June.

If they are going to come here by driving across the border then they won't need a passport till I believe January 2008. If they are planning on flying or coming by boat into the USA then they need a passport now. I would go ahead and get passports for both of them unless they don't want to go visit any family in Canada after January 2008. Passports are always good to have anyway. They are a universally accepted form of ID around the world.

While it's not a bad idea for them to apply for passport "just because", it seems from reports here that passports are not required for an AOS interview. If there's any stamping going on, the officer can stamp an I-94 for them.

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for your input. I'll find out how long they take to get, but I dont think we should worry ourselves sick over this since they were not needed for his TN or the kids TDs.

Thanks again gang!

they're taking quite a while to process these days because of backlog. Even if they apply for them now, they may well Not have them in time for the interview. It still wouldn't hurt to get them though, they'll need them to go anywhere in a few months. Even if they just want to go back home for a visit.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

exactly what I was thinking -- they probably won't get them in time for the AOS interview, but they will definitely need them in the future to travel home with the new passport regulations in place.
