As everyone has said this usually results in subsequent legs or journeys being cancelled.

For my k1 I booked a return where my returning journey was as far out as I could, came over in k1 in feb and returned to home country in December changed passport name in person and booked one way using loyalty scheme miles for the journey back to the us. We didn’t have enough miles in February to book the one way so couldn’t do it on the first trip out.

This is exactly what I did too, except I didn’t change passport name during that trip to home country (that is extra smart!)

I did ask the Airline, they said it is fine. However, afraid that the one that gives me the answer (customer service officer) is not knowledgeable enough about the situation. I will keep ask them again so that I will get an exact answer :)

No, they will cancel your entire flight if you were not checked in physically with documents on US side. I fly domestic and international so unless you have it in WRITING and policy document from online then the information is incorrect. Sorry, not being negative just up to speed on the US travel rules!! Good luck!!

many buy round trip as it is cheaper

why do you say something is too expensive and then say you are willing to buy a ticket before getting the visa and risk loosing that money?

save that money and spend it on the one way

I had the same problem when I was flying from Germany to Hawaii. A round trip was a lot cheaper than a one way coach ticket. So I ended up buying a first class one way ticket which gave me 2 bags instead of one and it was the same price as the round trip in coach.

I don't think you can buy your return ticket like that, if you don't use the outbound flight then the inbound flight will most likely be cancelled.

That's what I was told when I had an issue with my airline a few years ago, anyway. I had a flight from Jacksonville to Miami, then an eight hour wait at Miami airport before my flight to the UK. I would rather have taken a later flight, or my friend offered to drive me so I wasn't alone, but the airline told me if I wasn't on that first flight the next would be cancelled.

It may be different now, two years on but that's a lot of money to risk.

Edit: Also one way tickets tend to be refundable, which is why they're more expensive.

Australian airlines do this, too - if you don't use the first leg of a multi-stop trip or you don't show up for a particular flight, they cancel the rest of your tickets

Posted

On a slightly different note, make sure your tickets can be changed/cancelled with minimal fees, just in case there's a delay to getting your visa, or in the worst case, if you are denied, or there's something else you need to provide. Anything can happen, and you can't count on a particular departure date.

Eventually your fiance wants to return home after marriage.  Buy a ticket with a return 12 months in the future.  After AOS is complete, there is a ticket ready.  That is what I did .  I sure if you go to a travel agent in his country, there will be even cheaper pricing.

Hey there. Saw that you have viewed our profile and found out you are from Malaysia too. Good luck on your K1 visa.

Regarding the flight, since my hubby was back then staying in KL with me, we purchased 1 way tickets to CA. In order to get cheaper flight tickets it is better if you start looking for tickets 90 days before the intended flight date. We flown with PAL and the ticket was about $500 usd for 2 seats. I suppose your fiance shouldn't have any trouble to purchase a round-trip US->KUL->USA as long as he has your passport info. But did you try comparing the costs of x2 roundtrip tickets from US to KUL and back to US vs 1 roundtrip ticket and 1 one-way ticket for you? It might be cheaper with the latter option. Just pay extra $10-12 for some kind of hot-seats so you both can seat further up-front while on the way to U.S. We did upgrade our final leg of flight from Manila to SF to business with $1000, haha it was very comfortable. I like how you used the expression of (more comfortable for your fiance) cause mine has the same physical size :D

I already booked my ticket and I was also wondering which option I should book.

A one way ticket from Amsterdam to Salt Lake City was about 2500 euros, while a return ticket was 700 euros.

I contacted the airline (KLM) about this problem and they said you can book a return flight but you won’t get any refund for the return flight. Still, I wasn’t quite sure about buying a return ticket because I also read somewhere that if you cancel your return flight too often, the airline can charge you for it eventually. Again, I’m not sure if this is true, just something I’ve read somewhere.

In the end I went with another option. I bought a single ticket with KLM via Flying Blue loyalty program, which cost me about 850 euros.

This way I don’t have to worry about the consequences of cancelling a return flight and it’s still cheaper than the normal price they show on their website.

Maybe Malaysian Airlines also have some kind of loyalty program :)

Thank you everyone! <3

Yes, we did view your profile. Hehehehe..Love to go through other members profile and read everyone journey. Thank you so much for the wish! We are bit nervous actually. We have so much plan we want to do from April onwards. :D

Yes, we did compare it. However, we choose Malaysia airlines since they offer shortest time + reasonable price (since their duration time and the layover is shorter) + only one stop. From Malaysia, the flight will directly go to London (layover for 3 hours) and directly go to States.

On a slightly different note, make sure your tickets can be changed/cancelled with minimal fees, just in case there's a delay to getting your visa, or in the worst case, if you are denied, or there's something else you need to provide. Anything can happen, and you can't count on a particular departure date.

Hi,

Thank you, we still in the middle of comparing the flight, will choose flexibility ticket for my ticket ^_^
