Hi Everyone,

I need help, we start checking the flight ticket from Malaysia to USA, however, the price is extremely ridiculous. :
Return ticket : USD 1,200

One way ticket: USD 1,950

I need your opinion regarding this, I know that it is worth it to buy return ticket instead of the one-way ticket because of the price is much lower. However, since he will be flying here to attend the interview with me and we were planning to fly back to States together, Can I buy return ticket like this US-->KL-->US Instead of KL-->US-->KL? At least by doing it, my fiance will have empty seat next to him on that flight (he will be more comfortable) instead of just wasting the return ticket just like that.

P/s: I know that we shouldn't buy the flight ticket before having visa on hand. But, that is the risk we willing to take. So, appreciate if anyone can give their opinion on above query instead of highlight that we shouldn't buy the flight ticket yet. :)

DISCLAIMER: I'm not working with USCIS/NVC and never work with them. All my comment based on my own experience and what I read.

I don't think you can buy your return ticket like that, if you don't use the outbound flight then the inbound flight will most likely be cancelled.

That's what I was told when I had an issue with my airline a few years ago, anyway. I had a flight from Jacksonville to Miami, then an eight hour wait at Miami airport before my flight to the UK. I would rather have taken a later flight, or my friend offered to drive me so I wasn't alone, but the airline told me if I wasn't on that first flight the next would be cancelled.

It may be different now, two years on but that's a lot of money to risk.

Edit: Also one way tickets tend to be refundable, which is why they're more expensive.

Oh wow, thank you so much for the information. Glad that we didn't buy it yet. The one-way ticket that I will be buying is not refundable. So, it is a bit annoying to pay more since it is not refundable. :)

I did ask the Airline, they said it is fine. However, afraid that the one that gives me the answer (customer service officer) is not knowledgeable enough about the situation. I will keep ask them again so that I will get an exact answer :)

I know what you mean! I suppose the airline charge more for a one way flight because it's probably more difficult to fill seats that would have been used if the ticket was a return?

I don't know, their logic is as crazy as USCIS'!

Good luck with your interview! :D

Interesting... I work for an airline (and I have worked for a different one prior to this for 18 years) and the rule is always that all coupons must be used in sequence. Failure to use a coupon (that's what we call the part of the ticket for each flight) will result in all subsequent coupons being cancelled due to no-show.

Out of interest, which airline is this?

Malaysia Airlines.

Yes, I did feel it weird in the first place too, but, since the customer service answer like that. I thought it is really fine, however, since I'm not having a good feeling about it, that is why I asking about that. Glad that we didn't buy it yet

So you might want to read section 3.3 of their conditions of carriage regarding coupon sequence:

I already booked my ticket and I was also wondering which option I should book.

A one way ticket from Amsterdam to Salt Lake City was about 2500 euros, while a return ticket was 700 euros.

I contacted the airline (KLM) about this problem and they said you can book a return flight but you won’t get any refund for the return flight. Still, I wasn’t quite sure about buying a return ticket because I also read somewhere that if you cancel your return flight too often, the airline can charge you for it eventually. Again, I’m not sure if this is true, just something I’ve read somewhere.

In the end I went with another option. I bought a single ticket with KLM via Flying Blue loyalty program, which cost me about 850 euros.

This way I don’t have to worry about the consequences of cancelling a return flight and it’s still cheaper than the normal price they show on their website.

Maybe Malaysian Airlines also have some kind of loyalty program :)

I always bought returns, Norwegian I think charges each leg so that might be an option.

It is true that the airline reserves the right to charge you the fare difference between the cost of a one-way ticket (the journey you actuality took) and the cost of the ticket you bought as, strictly speaking, it's a breach of the ticket rules. In practice this never happens. They have no way of finding you (unless you are a member of their loyalty program but even that is a grey area to use your membership registration details to issue a fine to you) and they have no way of proving that this was your intention all along. It's quite possible you had every intention of using the flight but you became unwell, plans changed, you lost your job, etc, etc, etc. So although the rule stands, in theory it very rarely happens. There was someone who blogged about it and was bragging about how he "beat the airline (in this case, United) at their own game" by buying tickets like this and encouraged others to do the same in his blog. He was at least threatened with legal action by United - not sure if they followed through or not.
