There was thread that covered all of this and was a huge help to us. It included what databases the SS office workers need to use, and how to tell when they have made a mistake (we actually had to cover this with the employee during our second visit to the 2nd office).

We just went through this process in November and ended up using three! SS offices. The first office gave the absolutely not possible after marriage answer. However, the official SS answer was sent to us by submitting the question to the SS national office from their "contact us" link on their .gov website. The most important piece of that reply: "Note: Marriage does not affect an individual with K-1 statuss eligibility to be assigned an SSN, or issued a card.

We suggest that individuals with K-1 status apply for a corrected replacement SSN after marriage to update the SSN record to reflect the married name.

We accept all marriage documents issued within the 50 United States, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa."

Bottom line, expect it to be a struggle but as long as you apply for the card before day 76 of entering the US, their policy is that the k-1 (fiancé or spouse) is entitled to a number.

If we had to do it over again, we'd have gotten the SSN 10 days-ish, after entry (before marriage) and then just taken the marriage license to the office to update the name. Know that the fiancé does not require any "special" verification. If the employee does their job correctly, they should say: "expect the card in 7-10 days". If they give you a sheet saying they need to verify info with homeland, ask to verify the information they entered (this was the problem they had with us) and try again. (The other thread covers this error in detail)

The normal one for £45 will do.

if you have something on your record (no live trace) then you will also need to complete an access to data document.

my report came  in about 8 days.

It’s best to get the ssn 2 weeks after entering apparently, and then changing the name after marriage.

See quote above which contains a reply from “contact us” with SSA concerning when to get SSN. Also, since the I94 is now electronic u no longer have to wait 2 weeks. I’ve heard folks waiting 1-3 days.

Great, that's the one I will go with, after the length of time we have waited to get (to all most) the NOA2 weI don't want to have to wait any longer than we have too for the next stage.

Just as a by the by. Although it’s valid for 12 months. When I went to Knightsbridge they stated it had to be done no more the 6 mo this prior the medical appointment.

Actually...yeah. All kidding aside, when you give it due consideration, that's what I would think simply because it allows for the proper recording of an individual's name changes i.e. their very identity. Which is pretty darn important for record-keeping, heh.

I'll take another, more serious look at it with my fiance when I get down there. We'll figure it out and report back our results. In the meantime, l'mma just worry about getting my interview next week over with first.  One thing at a time :P

Got a couple other questions because I will need to send document to my fiancé once I returned.  Two issues I am running into:

-Employer will not write me a letter of employment verification.  What do I do in this instance?  They already said they won't do it unless requested by a third party.  Obviously immigration will not do this on my behalf.  Will my signed offer letter suffice?

-I visited my bank (Chase) to get proof for the I-134.  The document they provided me does not show the total amount deposited in the last year, and they said there is no way for them to show this other than just printing out a list of deposits/withdrawals.  What should I do in this instance?

-I was living abroad and did not start at my job until July.  As a result my 2017 income is 18k.  Will this cause problems?  I will make around 40k a year total, and this is provable.  But will my most recent tax returns showing less cause me an issue?

Can you request a copy of your contract from HR? That should have your job role, annual salary, when you started etc.. seems very odd they will not send you that. Very odd. 😕

No, not at all. June filers should be talking about whatever part of the process they're in. I only find it insensitive when July and August filers come to the JUNE forum to complain about their wait times. Like that's what YOUR forums are for. :)

We got an RFE after more than 8 months of waiting about a couple form questions that my lawyer swears were answered properly when we submitted. Our case updated to received last Wednesday. Hopefully we're almost there.

That’s good news. There seems to be a quick turnaround after RFE. Hopefully you won’t need to wait long for a medical and interview.

I aim to send off for it around the end of March but just need to get an over view of what's needed, I am going to have a word with my doctor to see about any injections and then get a print out and then move on to the I -134 form (the number might be wrong on that one) so WHEN the Noa2 comes we are ready to go!

My signed offer letter has  yearly salary, position type, start date, etc. It has the company logo on it and everything.  Only thing it does not indicate is permanent vs temporary.  It is a permanent position however.  I am not sure why they won't help me but I need to find a solution

Its those darn postal people.  They never deliver much before 3:00 central.  I still have 2 hours!  I was thinking about stalking them.

Stalk them! Stalk them!  :P

Do you have a body cam or a GoPro or something? You could narrate it Mission Impossible-style, put the footage online behind a paywall and make some money towards expenses.

I'd pay to see it! :P

Very true.

But imagine just trying to adjust into your new home.

No SSN, no driving license, can’t travel. I’ve always been quite independent, so hearing this is a bit of a downer. My fiancé is very positive and supportive, but I’ll hate that he’ll be carrying the financial burden for such a lengthy period. It’ll also be difficult for me to adjust into a new country. I’ve drove since my teens, and haven’t ever been unemployed.

I guess that there is always voluntary work to keep me occupied.

SSN is definitely only a few days-a couple weeks - it faster now because everything is electronic in terms of our entry into the country - as soon as they can see us on SAVE, we can get an SSN.

Drivers licence differs by state... I THINK I can get one in GA with my VISA and a household bill in my name to verify address, but its not 100% clear so waiting until I get there.

So maybe it's better to wait until after the wedding to apply for an SSN then, yeah!  I don't think you need an SSN to get married in the US since many people go there for destination weddings, right? Although It might differ by state so we'd all best double-check with our home states first.

Definitely NOT.  Your VISA and entry status will then be in a different name and cause issues - you really need to get the SSN before getting married, and then go back after with your marriage certificate to change the name.

At my interview, my fiance had the W2 and tax return - he offered other documentation (employer letter and paystubs) but they literally said, it can't be more perfect than those 2 things I just named.  If you have those and they show your sponsor above the level required, you absolutely dont need the employer letter.

Problem is my W2/Tax Return only reflect income from July to the end of the year as I was not living in the US again until July.  My 2017 income was roughly 18k, but was only 5 months of work.  I make well above the poverty guideline but my taxes do not reflect that yet
