Congrats! So happy for you guys! :)

Say, may I ask you...won't your fiance need an SSN to get married? Or will you have one arranged for him by then? Questions, questions! :P

For some reason I had the idea that you have to have an SSN to get married and that it takes a couple weeks to get that. Maybe it's different in different states?

My understanding is that you don't NEED one, no.  In my state, you're allowed to get a marriage license without one - there's a box on the application that says "Check if you don't have a Social Security Number" - so I assume you're ok to do the marriage without one as well.  He'll have applied for one by then but he won't have it yet, no.  Probably state-specific, like you said.  Everyone I've talked to (bank, health insurance, etc.) has said a SSN isn't necessary.

If I may, I have 1 more question. We were told we need to do the medical appointment 1 week before the interview.  This is difficult because we have to incur travel expenses for the medical appointment.  Ideally, my fiance could travel to Rio De Janeiro and do her medical the day before the interview - and that would save us significantly on travel costs.  What is the risk if we do it this way - possibly needing something at the Medical that requires more time and having to reschedule our interview?  This surprised me because I read other people's posts who said they did their medical and interview all in the same day.  Any thoughts VJ'ers?

Unfortunately, she can't escape from having to travel to Rio 2 times that is the US embassy process and paying for her trip would be included in your K1 plans. The exams ( X-ray, blood, and urine) need to be done at least 3-4 days before the doctor appointment. The Lab will send the results directly to the Doctor's office, and she can have her doctor appointment one day before the interview, The doctor will check her medical history, her blood pressure, temperature, and height,  he will then fill the forms with the information she provided and also with the vaccines card and give her a sealed envelop she needs to bring to the interview.

In my case, I did the process on 3 trips ( I live 1 hour from Rio) Exams on the 15th, Doctor appointment on the 20th and interview on the 27th.

Good luck.

It is different in different states, but usually there are usually exceptions if you do not have SS#.  either putting reason or putting in passport information of person.

With my security checks “still pending” I am debating whether to pursue contacting the ombudsman? Any thoughts @John & Rose? They have been pending since my visit to the field office on 1/23 and I received the letter from 2/13 from my online inquiry saying the same thing. No response or updates from my congresswoman

It certainly won't hurt.  Send the Ombudsman a inquiry.  They are not "USCIS" so you get a better answer from them.  At least that is what happened in my case.

This is a letter I sent to my lawyer. I filed 5/30/2017 then sent back a RFE 1/27/2018. I’m going on 9 months now.

Is it like this for all your clients ? I’m starting to feel discriminated against. I’ve been to the Philippines 🇵🇭 4 times this year to be with my fiancé. If met all the requirements. I’ve paid the fees. Thousands of people are getting k-1 visas that have filed months after us . There is no one to call or email at immigration. It’s like they are hiding from their customers. I have no idea who’s desk my application is sitting on and collecting dust. There is no way to check to see if they even received our RFE evidence we sent in. What if it was lost or something??? It’s almost been 9 months now. I’m losing my mind to be honest.

Thanks, I decided to go ahead and do it yesterday. If it’s truly security checks that are the hold up, I suppose there is nothing they can do...but I figure I might as well try every angle!

Hi all,

I'm not doing great. Had the interview today and it went okay. However, somehow my passport (therefore also my ACRO) has misspelled one of my middle names - it reads RIA rather than REA.

I have been told to get a new passport and ACRO check, and courier them to the embassy, and that I should be approved if they receive these, however was given a piece of paper reading "Your visa application has been refused pending submission of additional evidence" so I'm a bit confused and not in the best state mentally, currently.

My fiance's mother passed away 2 weeks ago, and he isn't doing great. My father is moving next week, so it is going to be a tough few weeks. I can only hope and pray that I am out of here by mid-March.

Sorry to be a downer.
