In Washington State you can use a foreign license for up to a year then you have to have a state license, I took the written test a couple of times but passed the driving test first time, in fact when the instructor told me to drive around the bollards he said that was the best he had seen in a long time  which made me very happy. I have a Washington State license valid for 5 years.

Kansas also requires everything. I couldn't use my brazilian driver's license. So I took the written test (the dumbas$ woman asked if I wanted to take in spanish or english :bonk: ) and then the road test, that was way easier than the one I took in Brazil 10 years ago, that I had to drive for a while and park the car in a small parking place between 2 cars) here I just drove for like 3 minutes and that was it.

Why is she a dumbass for asking what language you wanted to take the test in? I doubt Portuguese is an option in Kansas  , but what part of her giving you the language options makes her a dumbass?

I can see n&c's point, from a rather tangential experience--basically, my getting out of a speeding ticket in Aug 1994. The cop asked me whether my name was of FRENCH origin when I showed him my Alberta licence--it certainly appears to me to be a gross ignorance of geography.

Pauline,

My wife took a driver education course that prepared her for both the written and road tests. Much better for family harmony than me trying to help her prepare.

Yodrak

When people can already drive and have a valid license from their own country do they still take lessons before the driving test in the US. .....
